Bass player Carles Benavent is a musician who is globally respected. His work with the guitarist Paco de Lucia was noticed by Miles Davis and Chick Corea and his recordings inspire many Spanish musicians who roam the roads of flamenco and jazz music.
Carles Benavent is widely known not only as a jazz flamenco bass player but also as the creator of the flamenco bass style itself. During his 25 years of collaboration with Paco de Lucia he forged that unique style of playing now widely recognized by the flamenco bass community. What Jaco Pastorius became for the jazz style Carles Benavent became for the flamenco style.
Touring the world he has also meet and played with big-name artists such as Miles Davis, Chick Corea and Gil Goldstein.

Carles Benavent nace el 1 de Marzo de 1954 en el Poble Sec de Barcelona.
A los 13 años forma el grupo 'Crack'(Blues,Jazz,Rock) con Salvador Font y Emili Baleriola.
-1969 : 'Crack' se convierte en 'Máquina!', banda que marca un hito en la música española de la época.
-1973/74 : Alterna trabajos con grupos de jazz y música brasileña.
-1975: Funda, junto a Joan Albert Amargós, Salvador Font, Jaume Cortadellas, Jordi Bonell i Mathew Simon el grupo 'Música Urbana'.
-1979: Toca en diversas formaciones jazzísticas con músicos como Kitflus, Tito Duarte y Max Sunyer con el cual funda un trio juntamente con Salvador Niebla.
-1980: En este año entra a formar parte del grupo de Paco de Lucía, realizando giras por Europa, América y Japón, compartiendo escenario con Jorge Pardo, Rubem Dantas y Ramon de Algeciras entre otros.
-1981: A partir de ahora colabora en numerosas producciones discograficas flamencas, cabria destacar las de Camaron de la Isla y Paco de Lucia.
-1982: Entra en contacto con Chick Corea, con el que graba dos álbumes y realiza dos giras por todo el mundo.
-1983: Graba su primer disco como solista que también es editado en Alemania, Suiza y Austria. Debuta con su propia banda en el IV festival de jazz de Madrid y forma grupo con Jorge Pardo con el que graba dos discos.
-1985: Publica su segundo disco junto a Joan Albert Amargós (Dos de Copas).
Junto a Jorge Pardo participa en los festivales internacionales de Estambul y Cork.
-1986: Actúa en el festival de Grenoble con Jorge Pardo.
Recibe el premio especial de la crítica otorgado por RNE,RTVE y la revista Quártica Jazz.
-1987/88: Continua realizando giras por todo el mundo con el sexteto de Paco de Lucía y colabora con el violinista francés Didier Lockwood y colabora con la banda de Bernard Lubat en Francia.
-1989: Con el grupo 'Flamenco Fusión' actua en Nueva York con Michel Camilo y Paquito de Rivera.
Graba su segundo disco con Joan Albert Amargós (Colors), que cuenta con la colaboración de Didier Lockwood entre otros.
-1990: Es invitado, junto a Jorge Pardo, el pianista Gil Goldstein, Don Alias y Alex Acuña, para un concierto especial de la TV Suiza, que origina nuevas apariciones de esta banda en New York en Octubre del mismo año y la grabación de un disco (Zebra Coast) para la compañía Blue Note.
A partir de entonces, Gil Goldstein colabora habitualmente en sus discos.
-1991: Es invitado a tocar en un concierto especial en homenaje a Gil Evans con Miles Davis y Quincy Jones en el festival de Montreux, que tambien queda registrado en un Album (Live in Montreux).
-1992: Se presenta en el Town Hall de New York junto a Jorge pardo, invitados por el New Music Seminar.
En Julio del mismo año participan en el proyecto Alemán 'Jazzpaña' con la big band de la WDR de Colonia,con arreglos y direccion de Ariff Mardin & Vince Mendoza.
-1994: Fue galardonado por la Generalitat de Catalunya como mejor músico de jazz del año.
-1995: Edita su cuarto disco como solista (Agüita que corre)
El 4 de Abril de este año sufre un grave accidente de coche que le tendrá alejado de los escenarios durante un año.
-1996: Justo al cumplirse un año del accidente comienza una gira por europa con Paco de Lucía y reaparece con su grupo en Julio del mismo año, actuando en el Festival de Jazz de Getxo y en Barcelona, donde tambien graba su quinto disco (Fénix), interviniendo, además de sus colaboradores habituales, Othello Molineaux (Steel Drums).
-1998/99: Forma el trio 'Pardo, Benavent, Di Geraldo', (con el que sigue trabajando actualmente), grabando una de sus actuaciones (El concierto de Sevilla) en diciembre de 1999.
-2000: Gira en enero por Inglaterra "Homenaje de cumpleaños a Don Alias" con: Don Alias, Alex Acuña, Jovanny Hidalgo, Steve Barrios, Michael & Randy Brecker y Gil Goldstein.
-2002: Edita su séptimo disco (Aigua) Galardonado como el mejor disco de jazz del año por los 'Premios de la Música'.
-2003: Forma otro trío con Jordi Bonell y Roger Blavia.
Es invitado, junto a Jorge Pardo, Tino Di Geraldo y Gil Goldstein
a participar en el Festival de Jazz de Vitoria, tocando con Pat Metheny.
-2004: Vuelve a trabajar con Chick Corea juntamente con Jorge Pardo, Rubem Dantas y Tommy Brechtlein realizando giras por Europa y Estados Unidos (Chick Corea & Touchstone)
En Septiembre del mismo año actua en Barcelona como "Benavent 3 Trios": 1/ Jordi Bonell & Roger Blavia 2/ Gil Golstein & Jordi Rossy 3/ JorgePardo & Tino di Geraldo... y de nuevo la colaboracion especial de Othello Molineaux.
Graba con Jorge y Tino un nuevo disco "Sin Precedentes".
-2005: Graba "The Ultimate Adventure" de Chick Corea con: Steve Gadd, Vinnie Colayuta, Hubbert Laws, Airto Moreira, Hossam Ramzy,Tim Garland & "Touchstone Band" con la cual sigue girando por Estados Unidos, Europa y Sudamerica.

Carles Benavent was born in Poble Sec (Barcelona) the first of March of 1954.
At age of 13 he co-founded the band “crack” (blues, jazz, rock) with Salvador Font and Emili Baleriola.
1969: “Crack” becomes the band “maquina!” a band that was a historical milestone in Spanish rock bands.
1973/74: Plays with jazz and brasilian bands
1975: Co-founds the group “Música Urbana”, with Joan Albert Amargos, Salvador Font, Jaume Cortadellas, Jordi Bonell and Matthew Simon.
1979: Plays in different Jazz bands with musicians such as Kitflus, Tito Duarte etc…
Plays with the Max Sunyer Trio, with Salvador Niebla.
1980: Begins playing with the Paco de Lucia band,(Jorge Pardo, Rubem Dantas, Ramon de Algeciras…) touring Europe, America and Japan. This collaboration will continue until 2001.
1981: Plays in different flamenco recording sessions… Especially important are the recordings with Camaron de la Isla and Paco de Lucia.
1982: Meets Chick Corea, records two albums and does two world tours.
1983: Records his first album as a leader “Carles Benavent”. Debuts with his own band at Madrid Jazz Festival and…
1985: “Dos de Copas” a duo album with Joan Albert Amargos is edited
Plays at the Estambul and Cork festivals with Jorge Pardo.
1986: Plays at Grenoble festival with Jorge Pardo…he receives the “premio especial de la crítica”, given out by RNE, RTVE and the jazz magazine “Quártica Jazz”.
1987/88: Still touring with Paco de Lucia sextet, he also plays with the bands of Didier Lockwood and Bernard Lubat in France.
1989: Plays in New York with Michel Camilo and Paquito de Rivera with the “Flamenco Fusion project”
Edits his second album with Joan Albert Amargos “colors”with musicians such as Didier Lockwood, …
1990: Plays in a special concert for Switzerland TV with Jorge Pardo, Gil Goldstein, Don Alias and Alex Acuna. Because of this event the band plays in New York and records the album “Zebra Coast” (Blue Note records)
1991: Plays in a special concert featuring the music of Gil Evans, with Miles Davis among others and an orchestra conducted by Quincy Jones at the Montreux Jazz festival which is recorded and edited as “Miles Davis and Quincy Jones Live at Montreux”(Warner Bros.)
1992: Plays at New York’s Town Hall with Jorge Pardo, invited by the New Music Seminar.
Records “Jazzpana” with the WDR Big Band from Colonia, Germany, arranged and conducted by Ariff Mardin and Vince Mendoza.
1994: Receives the “Best Jazz Musician of the Year” award, given out by the Generalitat de Catalunya.
1995: Edits his 4th album as a leader, “Aguita que corre” (Nuevos Medios)
Suffers a car accident which will keep him off the stages during a year.
1996: One year after the accident he returns to the scene touring with Paco de Lucia and plays again with his own band (Jorge Pardo, J.A. Amargos, Rubem Dantas, Tino di Geraldo, Gil Goldstein and special guest Othello Molineaux) at the Getxo Jazz Festival, recording a new album: “Fénix” (Nuevos Medios).
1998/99: Co-founds the flamenco-jazz trio “Benavent-Di Geraldo-Pardo” editing one live album called “El Concierto de Sevilla” (Nuevos Medios).
2000: Tours England with Don Alias, Alex Acuna, Jovanny Hidalgo, Steve Barrios, Michel & Randy Brecker and Gil Goldstein for the tour called “Don Alias 60th Birthday”.
2002: Edits his seventh album “Aigua” (Nuevos Medios). It was awarded jazz album of the year by the SGAE.
2003: Forms a new trio with Jordi Bonell (guitar) and Roger Blavia (drums), which plays at the Vitoria Jazz Festival with Jorge Pardo, Tino di Geraldo, Gil Goldstein and Pat Metheny.
2004: Tours again with Chic Corea with “Chic Corea and Touchstone”.
Plays in Barcelona with the special show “Benavent 3 trios” (Bonell-Blavia/Di Geraldo –Pardo/Goldstein-Rossi and Othello Molineaux)
Records with Jorge and Tino a new album called “Sin Precedentes”.
2005: Records “The Ultimate Adventure” by Chic Corea with: Steve Gadd, Vinnie Colayuta, Hubert Laws, Airto Moreira, Hossam Ramzy, Tim Garland and is still touring with the “Touchstone Band” throughout the USA, Europe and South America.
