Sloan writes the tunes. He quit the drums cold turkey a few years back and picked up the guitar and taught himself to sing. Damon came from Illinois and brought with him impeccable taste and vision. Kipp was a fusion junky and though we reeled him in he still sneaks in some fancy shit. We heard Dave play with Cabinessence and knew we had to have those far out spacey colors he was painting with his fingers. Tucker, what can you say, he's the master of the high lonesome starry desert noir sound-scape. Adam is the most versatile musician in Portland and has the attitude of a saint, mostly. We want to travel! About the new record "Bending Mirrors": Well... lets see... this record has taken almost two years! The writing began one sunny Easter Sunday lying with a scantily clad friend in a Portland churchyard, much of it was written while gazing out the windows of Amtrak trains traveling across the country to New York City and back, road trips to the North Cascades, the Oregon Coast, L.A. to dry the bones, an Indian pick-nick for the Celilo Wy-am folks out at their village which was the inspiration for the tune Wy-am… the material was helped along by the fresh young ears of Sloan's little brother Sam, inspirational shop talk with Johnny McDonald (The Woolwines), Darin Craig (Meridian, Jackstraw), Matt Sheehy, Jordan Leff (UHF, engineer at Secret Society), and informal song fleshing jams with Damon and Matt Cadenelli aka “The Don” (drummer for Fernando) ....and it ended at winter's tomb with Portland covered in record snows. It was mostly tracked at Secret Society with Jordan at the helm. A few tunes were recorded in David Pulliams living room. A couple tunes were started in Kipp Crawford's humble unheated garage last winter, others in Graham Nystrom's sunny old living room last summer. A couple original demo vocals (Wy-am, and Winter Pills) made it onto the record. Often Sloan would bring Kipp the songs in their infancy, and then later start fleshing them out with the rest of the band. About two-thirds of the way through he bought a type writer and an old Tascam digital 8-track, started finger picking, and that seemed to help sustain the flow of tunes. A couple books that kept the creative fires stoked were "Sanctuary" by Faulkner, "Blood Meridian" by McCarthy, "Comfortably Numb" by Mark Blake, "The Nine Mile Wolves" by Rick Bass..... A couple albums we got cozy with were Land of Talk's "Some Are Lakes", Bon Iver's "For Emma Forever Ago", The Walkmen’s “You and Me”, Pink Floyds's "Dark Side of the Moon".....

Was great to be able to share a night of rock n roll as well as healing with you. We were honored to be there. Blessings to you and yours over the holidays.
I am so sorry guys, Kip was an amazing friend and an exemplary person. I am very sad at the loss of such an inspiring individual. He was certainly a good friend to me.
This month we mostly have Catie Curtis (with a Richard Thompson cover), Lindsay Fuller and The Cheap Dates (and who amongst us isn't?), Josh Fix with a track from the well-titled album This Town Is Starting To Make Me Angry and the rather lovely Red Rooster.
Four more little sonic gems for your August pleasure are now available on the site. Blitzen Trapper, Boulder Acoustic Society, Jay Brannan and The Wiyos. Yet another fine quartet even though we say so ourselves as picked them out.
Hello, after an unfortunate hiatus, the reasons for which are probably best not gone into here, we finally have some new music on the AUK MySpace site. For your listening pleasure this month we offer Nathan Oliver, Conrad Ford, the irrepressible Todd Snider and the delightful Beccy Owen. Don't forget too, for those of you within striking distance of Leicester, Electric Dustbowl 2 on 19 September.
