Hailing from Yokohama, Japan, Choke Sleeper was founded in 1997 by three friends united by bikes, snowboarding, BMX and a thirst for music. It took two years for the line up to be as it is today. Shige and Chu joined in 1999. With Shige on guitar and vocals and Chu supplying the rapping completed the line up of Kenken (drums), Azumi (bass) and Toru (lead guitar). Combining punk rock with driving bass lines, catchy tunes and Chu..s rapping, Choke sleeper soon established themselves as a force to be reckoned with. Less than year later the band had two tracks included on the album Time will tell. The next year saw the release of the Swing my soul EP. Through hard touring and a reputation as a party bandEthey soon built up a loyal following.
Since 2001 their unique sound has led them to become a favorite opening act for US punk bands touring Japan, for Good Riddance in that year. They have since opened for The Suicide Machines, Antiflag, Rise Against, NO USE FOR A NAME, Kottonmouth kings, Judge-d, saint dog, Big-B, and the Phunk Junkees. Meanwhile they continued to build their following in Japan. Their chokesleepartyEevent in their hometown of Yokohama is a sold out affair. In 2002 their track leave me alone was
included on the various artists album Ea tribute to beckE
2003 was a busy year, with the inclusion of 1 track on the kick the normEalbum, followed by the release of their first mini-album Star of the Day and the subsequent nationwide tour. In December they played in front of 20000 people at the X-TrailEsnowboarding festival in the Tokyo Dome.
April 2004 saw them performing at BMX, FMX festival multiplexE The kick started the summer in style, opening the rock stage at SUMMER SONIC ..04(same stage with ZEBRA HEAD,MIDTOWN,MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE,HOOBASTANK...). Their first album Summertime Cruisin.. was released shortly after and so began a grueling 45 gig Japan-wide tour. and song "ground and sky" was included on the snowbording DVD film"THE WAY".
2005 has seemed them build on their foundations as a unique and entertaining lice act, they were asked back to perform at the BMX festival MultiplexEopening for KOTTONMOUTH KINGS, they..ve toured Japan with their new mini-album Stay, as well as performing at The Guitar Freaks and DrumMania Festival. and song "STAY" was included on the snowbording film "HOLY SHIT" . Their unique sound, tight live performances, and reputation to party means they have built up a loyal fan base which is set to continue.
