chris rainier is a lapsteel player and guitarist, enthusiast of and performer on the trautonium, composer and instrument-builder based in melbourne, australia. since 2004 he has explored the creative possibilities of the lapsteel guitar, most recently utilizing various preparations, multiple loopers and hand-held electronic devices to expand the sonic palette of the instrument. he has performed and recorded with musicians from around the world (australia, india, indonesia, south africa, japan and china) in a variety of styles, from north indian classical music on dobro to improvised soundtracks on the electric lapsteel. his playing has been featured on various recordings, radio stations (abc radio national, rrr, pbs-fm, triple j, fbi), television and film soundtracks. in 2009 he contributed lapsteel and guitar to two films scored by electronics legend ollie olsen, one of which (the loved ones) will premier at the melbourne international film festival.
from 2000 to 2004 chris performed with sydney-based balinese gamelan ensemble sekaa gong tirta sinar. he has also studied north and south indian instrumental music (on veena, sitar and tabla) in india, south africa and australia.
in australia, chris has performed at the melbourne fringe festival, great escape festival (sydney), bellingen global carnival, hyde park (sydney), art gallery of new south wales, sydney college of the arts, sydney conservatorium of music, various venues around melbourne (loop bar, make it up club, glitch bar, horse bazaar) and the national gallery of victoria.
in 2002 he graduated with a master's degree in composition from the sydney conservatorium, under the supervision of dr. greg schiemer. during this time he explored the history and theory of microtonal music, specifically the work of american composer harry partch. recent compositions include a string quartet, a work for chamber ensemble (nonet), and a commissioned work for bass clarinet.
his instrument designs include the xenophone, a 66-key microtonal metal percussion instrument influenced by balinese gamelan and the theories of partch and mexican theorist augusto novaro. in 2002 chris re-constructed (with clive cooper) a replica of partch's adapted guitar 1 and performed the australasian premiere of the original (1941) version of barstow live on abc radio national in an interview with andrew ford. between 2004 and 2006 he constructed a replica of the trautonium, one of the first electronic musical instruments, invented by friedrich trautwein in germany in 1929. currently he is designing and building a unique multi-track audio looping device for live and studio use.

Ah! Sad to hear you are struck down. Glad you like the web stuff - you've gotto hate the sad reality that we need to sit in front of these machines every day when "the overriding concern is how to make use of sound." I am going to start writing about how "people of each land need only listen to music close at hand and be contented." Viva la local. On that note, how about organising me a small tour of Oz??!!
My Bra, How ganit met u? Ek het amper Lara by my consert grekry...maar in die einde het sy nie gekom...nie. Daar is nou 'n track op my profile blatsy. Vok maar die taal is nou baie difficult...Derek
A striking array of juxtaposed voices, tastefully and thoughtfully arranged. Never heard a ring modulator sound like just the right touch, but here it does. The Weissenborn makes my toes curl. Keep it coming; I'll be listening.
