Chromatics is the voice and face of Hip-Hop in Trinidad & Tobago, and recently the entire Caribbean. Growing up in the West Indies "Matics", as he is often called was exposed to a world of music most people would never encounter. The Calypso's and Soca of his homeland, the Reggae, Dancehall and Salsa of his neighbouring islands combined with the burgeoning world presence of Hip-Hop in the early nineties, all came together to form something NEW, yet familiar. Apart from this exterior influence his family was deep into music. His mother having grown up in England was a professionally trained Opera singer; his cousins played drums in different local bands and remember when he 10 years old banging on their drums in the band room. His older brother played guitar and later went on to manage bands and groups. It wasn't until ANOTHER family member returned from America and suggested he write a rhyme.
Since he first started writing rhymes he has accomplished what few could dream of doing in his homeland. He recorded in the same studio Notorious BIG recorded Life After Death (Caribbean Sound Basin). Opened shows locally in T&T for the likes of Dougie Fresh, Slick Rick, Sean Paul, Bounty Killer, Elephant Man. His music video for the single “Basement Party” was heavily rotated in Jamaica on Hype TV, jamaica's 1 entertainment station. He has performed in, Boston, London, Grenada and most recently at the Virgin Atlantic Music Festival in Barbados 2008, where he is already booked for the festival in 2009. His debut solo album "Against The Grain" has sold over 2,500 copies in Trinidad alone (population 1.6 million). What sets Chromatics apart from your average "Rapper" is he is not just a rapper, but an entity, not just the CCO of Highway Records, but his own brand, with his music store, studio and most recently his all hip-hop radio program "The Grind" on Next 99.1 fm in T&T. He embodies the soul of "The Small Island Man" with the big dream and determination to succeed, and nothing captures this more than when he takes the stage.
