Worldwide Reviews for THE RECKONING (Transcend Records) Released 14th September 2009
Big Cheese (UK) - Rating: 4/5
"...It contains a ridiculous amount of epic riffs that attack the ears in the best way possible...in truth, every single track here is gold. Powerful, punishing and chaotic - theyre a breath of fresh air."
Power Play Magazine (UK) Rating: 7 / 10
"The EP sounds more deliberate, taking on a more serious edge, which comes to the floor on the title track and begins with a hypnotic rasping riff. My opinion about this band playing modern metal in the way it should be played has not changed one iota and if anything I expect the band to be thrust forth into greater things in the future. Be sure to check out these UK metallers as they have the potential of becoming a top class metal outfit."
Zero Tolerance Magazine (UK) Rating: 4.5 / 6
"Its always good to see a British band with so much promise - and Cinders Fall have that in spades. For a young band, they spew forth one hell of a cultivated sound that could easily be confused for In Flames or Dark Tranquillity when they were more metal and less progressive. They really understand what makes a great song, and they know how to use a great riff and garnish it with all the right harmonies and solos...these boys will go a long way."
Room Thirteen (UK) Rating: 12 / 13:
"Another seriously good EP of no messing, full on and aggressive metal from UK six piece Cinders Fall. It’s really great to hear they haven’t compromised their sound at all since their last EP ‘The Bridge Between’, they’re still all about the noise with no hint of any lightweight crooning or lapses into cheesy screamo nonsense, even on the final track ‘The Reckoning’ which brings in a more melodic sound. This new batch of tracks again mixes up thrash drums, intense and complex riffs and death metal style vocals to produce something seriously heavy but with hooks and melodic undertones. Technically they never fail to impress, with those trademark inventive and tuneful guitars adding so much to each powerhouse tune, it’s shocking they aren’t every metal fan’s favourite band...A sure fire cure for any cravings you may have for a dose of ‘proper’ metal."
Subba-Cultcha (UK)
...Cinders Fall are a band yearning to break out of the underground and into the hearts of the metal masses. 'The Reckoning' is a 20-minute declaration of this and comes out guns blazing...Influences from all over the metal map (Gothenburg, UK and USA are all represented here) are mixed to create a huge sound that other UK bands should be stepping up to try and attain.
'The Reckoning' shows promise in droves and if Cinders Fall continue to travel down their current 'epic metal' path then we could well see some of the most anthemic heavy music to come out of the UK in a long time.
Alternative Vision (UK) - Rating: 5/5
"Cinders Fall are one of the best thrash metal bands that the UK has produced in a long time."
ROCK3MUSIC (UK) - Rating: 96%
"...Cinders Fall produce a blast of modern metal blended and cleansed of mainstream cliché’s hybridised with the best of what metal can produce today they have no compunction in setting out their stall for truth and fury."
MTUK (UK):
"This is the second E.P. by the Essex mob, and if it’s anything to go by then they have quite a future ahead. These five tracks are packed full of vigour and do a fine job of hooking you in...Overall this is a fully commendable album for fans of melodic death metal; the right mix of heaviness and tunefulness to make this work and will have your head banging from start to end."
Sleazgrinder (UK)
"Hailing, not that you can tell thankfully, from the UK pit of Essex, this six piece of mayhem shoot five tips of depleted uranium dum-dum metal in your face and piss on the scars. Out of a revolving whirlwind of the havoc they conjure they create epic pestilences of anthemic thrash with death more dancing than waiting in the wings on the strings of an unstoppablly pulverising marching symphony of battle joined and rousing sermons delivered. Where many fail and should have their windpipes and ear canals torn out by bands of this calibre, CF unleash the storms of euphoria of Maiden and Metallica at their peaks. Juggernaut riffs, layered with all the classic pauses, pushes and pulses, octaves and harmonies driven forward like a helltrain powered by a nuclear wind turbine and furious death rattle vocal growls that have direction and don't just wail into the void. Stand up and be pounded into glorious submission. This is a thrilling testament to all that is and should be metal."
Rock Pulse (UK) - Rating: 7 / 10
"This is a tantalising glimpse at a band who’re in with a real shot at metal’s big leagues."
Metal 4 Life (UK) - Rating: 4/5
"...Cinders Fall come up trumps on this offering. This very young looking bunch deliver modern thrashy melodic death metal par-excellence...What lifts the band above many others is their ability to pen memorable hooky thrashy riffs that bounce along with jolly abandon without wanting to bludgeon you with over heaviness or anything like that. They caress your ears with their crisp melodic metal and allow their songs to breathe and gradually reveal their labyrinthine riffs to delve deep into your subconscious."
Sonic Dice (UK)
"There is an elegance about the guitar work here; a lightness of touch that sits uneasily alongside the vehemence of the vocal and the harrowing nature of the lyrics, but somehow Cinders Fall knit these conflicting factors together to really drive the two opposites down the same path and consequently deliver a really impressive slab of twisted metal...The state of British heavy metal hasn't looked this healthy for awhile now."
Metal Revolution (Denmark) Rating: 82 / 100:
...the band draws its main inspirations from a Gothenburg-school and bands such In Flames, Dark Tranquillity and even Iron Maiden. Yet, the band manages to create something on their own and not just being one of the numerous rip-offs. They are almost the inventers of a whole new genre, combing the enthralling melodies, catchiness, fury and aggression of the genre... their twin guitar work is simply amazing carried on with harsh and strong vocals as well as the solid and interesting songwriting. You can hear all of traditional metal ingredients here; starting off with excellent riffing, intense thrash drumming, complex soloing and refreshing blast beats.
Rock Freaks.net (Denmark) - Rating 7/10:
"...Cinders Fall manage to wrap the patrimony of the classic Gothenburg scene into a modern and fresh covering. Beautiful, enthralling melodies swim side by side with a robust aggression in a hypnotic, medium-paced tempo, accompanied by ceaseless harsh vocals that never make the leap into a melodic chorus...Cinders Fall pay a tribute to one of the most celebrated sub-genres in metal and they play it damn well. For once the hype issued by UK's larger alternative magazines is not undue."
Power Metal Webzine (Germany):
"Great guitar melodies are trump and that counts for all 5 pieces. We've got amazing guitar leads, beautiful solos and an immense metalic drive which, at least for the lenght of an EP, brings fun."
Extreme Aggression (Germany) - Rating: 9 / 10:
"Due to lots of great reviews, the guys are known outside their homegrounds already. Looking at 'The Reckoning', this will continue to be so and grow. Great produced melodic death Metal with little trips in the direction of HC, at least with the vocals. The whole thing is spiced up with well placed keyboard tunes. The music is mainly mid tempo and slides into slower grounds with the refrains, which become really smashing thanks to perfect hooklines!!"
Possessed (Germany):
"Listening to the EP is pure fun because it sparks with energy and I am pretty sure a label deal is coming up for the guys. The 5 tracks combine Thrash Metal with typical melodic Gothenburg Death Metal and modern Metal. The band mixes those styles in a great way and especially the Death Metal parts, mainly in the drum sector, are really interesting."
Metal Earth (Germany):
"Technicially seen, it is hard to find anything negative to say.No question, we are not dealing with 6 kiddies who are taking their first steps with the instruments. Most of all you can see that with riff work which comes with lots of variation and a perfect timing for amazing breaks. It's not overdone and kicks the listeners ass."
Heavy Hardes Webzine (Germany):
The guys are playing a mix of melodic Death Metal the Swedish way and are adding some more spices to it.One of them being Thrash Metal which is most notable in the drumming. The guitars are strong and the vocals come across mean and powerful.Talking about vocals, it's nice that Cinders Fall are not using pop like choruses and clean singing. That makes the heart of the Death Metal fan jump as much as the fine melodies that are a constant part of the songs as are the twin guitars. That makes us happy and fills us with joy.
You could call Cinders Fall a mix between In Flames,Dark Tranquillity, Paradise Lost and Machine Head.Modern and melodic Metal which could barely be played better. Something really big might just come our way.
Hell Is Open Webzine (Germany) - Rating 7/10:
'The drums firing away is most impressive and when amazing leads like in ' The sorrow' join in, a hit potencial is given that puts you in a good mood and makes your feet move along.'
Regazzi Webzine (Germany):
Cinders Fall are Brit and rock as if they come from the Swedish woods or the New York underground. They can play complex and speed metal style, almost hardcore and are their technique is captivating.
5 songs are on the EP 'The reckoning; ultra fast, brutal and fierce metal tracks which have a bombastic tendency to Symphonic Sound. Most of the money should go to the singer, because his agression is expressed most.
The drum are technicially at home in speed metal, played brilliantly. The Bass player has got an easy game and a great amp. Verdict: well done!!!
Sleaze Metal Webzine (Germany) - Rating: 8.5 / 10 :
"The sound of the Essex band in contagious and spreads the Cinders Fall Virus like a storm. 'Dead Zone' fires away with great riffs and is followed by 'The Sorrow' and listening to the phenomenal melodic shocker 'Beyond Existence' makes it hard to breathe.'
Metal Storm (Belgium) - Rating 8.3 / 10
"...despite being a pretty young band nonetheless, succeed with flying colors to wrap the patrimony of the classic Gothenburg-based founders of the genre into a modern and fresh covering...Absolute highlights of this release are the excellent twin guitar work, the ceaseless harsh vocals and the surprisingly rock solid songwriting. These guys really know their stuff!"
Hails and Horns Magazine (USA):
'The UK's CINDERS FALL is bringing back a level of heaviness that will rejuvenate the saturated 'Gothenburg' sound!'
The Thrash Metal Guide (USA):
This band offers quite cool melodic Gothenburg-influenced thrash/death metal. There are plenty of melodic hooks to keep the listener entertained, and this is what actually makes every song differing from the rest. The tempo is quite energetic and brisk, and the headbangers will not be disappointed, especially on cool fast-paced thrashers, like 'The Reckoning' (this one has a very nice slower break, with a cool background piano tune adding to the atmosphere) and 'The Sorrow', which is a great riffest with some of the catchiest melodic hooks around. The fans of Dark Tranquillity, early In Flames, and At the Gates would hardly wait until the release of the eventual full-length.'
