Clare Muireann Murphy is a part of the new wave in Irish storytelling. Clare's unique physical style of telling has delighted audiences the world over. She has graced the stages of the Globe Theatre in London, Vienna Lit Festival, Cheltenham Literature Festival, Kilkenny Arts Festival and more. She has a repertoire that far extends beyond her beloved Irish myths and legends into world folklore, fables, legends, wisdom tales, participation tales and so on.
Clare has told stories for people of all ages and backgrounds, including work with travellers, refugees, youth at risk, elderly groups, Montessori groups, teachers, actors, community workers, university students and after school groups.
She has toured the UK and the USA several times in the last few years. Clare toured the UK twice in 2008 with Traditional Arts Team's highly successful Storytelling Cafe tour.Trad Arts Team homepage
Her most recent UK tour (March 2009) was a solo self managed tour.
Clare was nominated for the Arts Foundation Fellowship Storytelling Award in 2008. She is a Social Entrepreneur Award winner 2007, and twice winner of the Muscailt literary Short Story Award 2005, 2006. She is the Director of the Community Storytelling Initiative, Galway. She is also a member of Storytellers of Ireland, and Poetry Ireland's Writers in Schools Scheme.
The Community Storytelling Initiative was founded in 2006; its aim is to work with communities (main and marginalised) through storytelling. This initiative has spawned many projects including:
STORY NIGHT (2006); a monthly storytelling evening open to all. Listeners and tellers are welcome. STORY NIGHT is on the first Tuesday of every month at the Spirit Centre, Nun's Island at 9pm. Everyone is welcome, a donation of €2 is asked to cover rent.
THE INTERNATIONAL NIGHT OF TALES. An intercultural project that worked with members of the international community over six weeks culminating in a sold out performance on March 11th, 2009. Ten tellers and the Big Sing Multicultural Choir performed at this dynamic and successful two hour show.
