Though Conifer had received quite a bit of critical praise in response to their national touring and few releases, they somehow managed to live off the grid for the seven years they existed in the isolated coastal city of Portland, Maine. Not easily pigeon-holed by a set genre, mixing post-rock, kraut-rock, metal and psychedelia in a VERY loud way, they created relentlessly driving and hypnotic music inspired less by local signifiers than by German ones. Though rooted in thick, technically stunning heaviness (think Shellac or the punishing ending of Mogwai's "Like Herod")—is also indebted to German minimalism and krautrock. Passages of ambient beauty nestle against interlocking, repetitive beats & sheets of untreated guitar fuzz. An evolving monster throughout its years adding & losing members, they started as mathrock, became more psychedelicized via dooom, and before breaking up had started breathing and churning like a shreiking metal Amon Duul II spewing forth soaring early Scorpions-esque solos contorted and out of control as a speeding train wreck towards Guru Guru land. .. ..
