About Coolie Pool
After their successful performance at the "Olivia Indie Fest II", in
Cancun Mexico, Coolie Pool released their first CD "To Drive", a self
released 5 song EP on 023 Records in the fall of 2008. With the help of
Apples and Cats Media radio promotions, the CD received positive
reception at several College and Independent/Alternative radio stations.
These stations include WLUW in Chicago, KWUR in St. Louis WRUV in VT,
WNMC in MI, WBCR in WI, and KCUR and KCSS in Ca.
Coolie Pool was recently included on the international compilation CD,
Expose Your Muse 2009, sponsored by the Public Muse Group and
distributed at the Midem Exhibition in Cannes, France Jan 2009.
Boston based Coolie Pool is the eclectic duo of musicians Sandy
Zaragoza and Carolyn Castellano. Although, they have played together
in numerous bands over the years, their most recent musical endeavor,
Coolie Pool was formed in 2007.The name, "Coolie Pool" is the brainchild
of a 7 year old and they think it's just " COOOLLLIIIIEEEEE !!!"
Coolie Pool's music has been described as an electro-ambient-rock
hybrid. Castellano’s clarinet, trumpet and percussion playing combined
Zaragoza's signature ambient, melodic guitar lines are supported by
underlying drum loops and steady bass grooves.
Sandy and Carolyn first met in Burlington, VT where they played
together in the band Miss Bliss. Miss Bliss was one of the first and only
all women's new wave/rock bands at the time. (Incidentally, as a tribute
to the band-The Magic Hat Brewing Company named a beer after them-
Miss Bliss Ale). The band moved to Boston, flirted with Capital Records
over a demo deal and eventually changed its name to Augusta Furnace.
Since then both Sandy and Carolyn have been active in the Boston
music scene.
In Addition to Coolie Pool, Sandy has played with Stranger Than
Pretty and more recently with the spoken word with music project
Pincurl, featuring awarding winning slam performance poet/writer/
musician CD Collins. Sandy’s influences include PJ Harvey, Brazilian Girls
Sigur Ros, Chrissie Hynde, Echo and the Bunnymen.
Carolyn got her start playing the clubs of NYC as a teenager and
listening to Broadway musicals at home. She is well versed in everything
from jazz to rock. Her musical influences include Andrew De’Angelo,
Blonde Redhead, Debussy, Ives and Lucinda Williams. She has played w
with numerous musicians including folk artist Ellis Paul, Charley
Kohlhase, Jane Wang, Satako, Fujii, and Rob Levit. She went to Berklee
College of Music, studied with Bob Gullotti for 8 years and has a master
of music from Boston University. In addition to Coolie Pool
She currently plays with Sarah Woolf and Kate Finn, and is the band h
