MUMBLES AND WHISPERS update from dNo
For the last few months, Curious Volume has been in the process of recording a new album, entitled "Mumbles and Whispers". We are taking a lot of pride in this project not only because it is our music, but also because of the fact that we are doing this entirely by ourselves. After saving up enough money working menial, minimum wage jobs, we were able to buy the necessary equipment involved in making home recordings. Since then, I've been learning the ins and outs of my recording interface and deciphering the wonders of Logic Pro 8 on my Macbook Pro. It has been quite a struggle. Anyone who has done any home recording knows that even using a simple program like Garageband is challenging. Imagine trying to achieve a respectable sound recording all live instruments and then mixing it all down to sound uniform. It is the most difficult thing I have been presented with musically and it has led to many long hours in a tiny room in my basement, which is by no means designed to be a recording studio. We gathered up old comforters and sleeping bags and stapled them to the walls as a means of makeshift soundproofing. Drums, bass, guitar, keyboards, vocals, mixing, EVERYTHING is all done in that tiny room. It gets very hot in there.
You may ask, "Why would you do this if it poses as many challenges as you claim?" Well the answer is simple: the upsides to this are extremely beneficial. By making the investment in the recording equipment, we never have to step foot inside a "professional" studio where we would have to pay by the hour and therefore be pressed for time. If you know anything about Curious Volume, you know that we do not like to rush. The more time we are able to take with these songs, the better it will come out in the end. This extra time is also allowing us to experiment in ways we wouldn't have if we were on a time limit. When we recorded Yellow Dog a few years back, we were in an incredible professional studio (SOR Studios on Staten Island) with an amazing genius of an engineer (Adam Reich). After the 10 free hours of recording time we had won in a Battle of the Bands was gone, we paid $50 (or $60? I don't remember) an hour for the rest of the time we needed. This depleted our band fund and left us with little time to mess around. The thought of using synthesizers or horns or different panning and mixing techniques never crossed our minds during that experience, because we had such little time and freedom. We didn't even put harmonies on the vocals, which, looking back, I realize was very unfortunate. This album will be different and that can be evidenced in the track we released on the Myspace. As a band, we have been much more able to control the way things sound, because we don't have any kind of engineers or producers helping us out. All the mixing thus far has been done by yours truly and, while it is a pain in the ass, the finished product will be that much more rewarding. I will give no more information on the album besides that it is called "Mumbles and Whispers" and that it will have music on it. Thanks for being interested and I hope to see you at a show.
Facts:
From Staten Island, NY and PROUD OF IT
We've been playing together since 2004, and have been friends since Kindergarten.
We don't have an image, we don't have an ego. We're not hip.
We have an extremely strong friendship with many of the local bands in our area, but there are some bands we blatantly and unapologetically make fun of.
We are not part of any specific genre per se, but generally are accepted in the ska, punk, and rock and roll "scenes".
Coming to one of our shows is a way to have a really good time.
We have crappy T-Shirts if you want one. They're adorable.
We are extremely low-budget. Our parents don't put out money for us to take fancy press shots and buy fake Myspace tools and go to incredible studios. The only way we were able to record the Yellow Dog EP was because we won the 2006 Staten Island's Greatest Band Competition. Our current album is being recorded in dNo's basement.
Yes, we will play at your party.
We sound like all your favorite bands and we're better-looking than the Beatles, so you'll like us! Don't worry.
