   Current Gallery's Blurbs
About me:
City Paper's Best of Baltimore 2006:
BEST ART GALLERY

Here's a bright outpost of the vigorous DIY ethic that characterizes this city's quirky, self-sustaining art community. Born of an artist collective's ambitions to build a space out of the front of a condemned downtown building, Current Gallery has taken an unconventional route to gallery infamy. The original crew of 15 artists are now down to four, and the building itself will eventually be demolished to make way for the inevitable downtown commercial spread, but Current marches on with provocative, whimsical, and street-smart exhibits. Take two shows as examples. Creative Capitalism explored ways to imbue production-line art and music with humanity and personality--a CD label-stamping task was turned into a musical performance, while gallery volunteers donned Current Gallery work shirts. Dilapidated Reanimated, exhibited at this year's Artscape, inspired artists to explore creative ways to reuse the abandoned lots and buildings that mar the city's landscape--reuse of unused property much like the very building they inhabit. With an exhibit hall built of drywall scavenged from the upper floors of the building, Current is no fussy art gallery. It's unlike anything else in the city.

CITY'S PAPER BEST OF BALTIMORE 2007:
BEST ART GALLERY

Downtown's Current Gallery would win this category for its multipurpose zeal alone if we wanted to throw its music shows and other sundry performance events into the mix. But it's the Current's curatorial verve that keeps us coming back for more--whether it be the so-called maximalist pairing of Ben Furgal and Jimmy Joe Roche or the insouciant Device show of casual, candid digital photography. Not all of it always works--or is even that interesting--but that's what makes Current so vital. The curatorial team isn't afraid--of silliness, of being impolite, of being serious about lowbrow mindedness, of total failure--a cliff's-edge daring so needed in Baltimore's, and, honestly, any city's art community to prevent it from becoming too stiff, staid, or satisfied. Here's to trying anything once--perhaps twice just to make sure.

ABANDON SHIP: CALL FOR PARTICIPATION! opening June 10 (an ongoing collaborative installation)
//////////////////////////////////////////////////
An exhibition in preparation for the demolition of 30 South Calvert Street. For the past four years, Current has been a breeding ground for cultural production, opening onto countless collaborators, nourishing an ongoing conversation. Like a supernova before the collapse, we prepare for the building's demolition with an ongoing collaborative exhibition that embodies 30 South Calvert. Welcoming you moments before bulldozers consume the building, and we slither out the anus of the temporary shelter, like a colony of parasites discharged onto the city
Current Gallery invites everyone across all disciplines to participate in Current Gallery's Abandon Ship, our last exhibition at 30 South Calvert Street. Abandon Ship is a collection of projects designed to be demolished with the building, including projects on the interior and exterior of the building. Works may include but are in no way limited to: printed matter, painting, installation, interactive, environmental/site specific, workshops, performance, murals, *video, design, sound, etc.
We are currently accepting proposals to be installed prior to the opening reception July 10, and projects added throughout the duration of the exhibition. Also, we are planning a Closing Reception/Alley Festival in late August or early September, so we will be looking for performances, music, and videos
*Video works will be shown during selected screenings throughout the exhibition and on view on our website.

Please include the following: 1. Artist(s) contact info (phone number, email) 2. Proposal including approximate dimensions 3. images (optional) 4. website (optional)
Send proposal(s) to currentspace@gmail.com, subject "Abandon Ship Proposal"

II. HIGH PRIESTESS. 0274.
bb (pictured: a. orchid)

Continuing his journey, the Fool comes upon a beautiful and mysterious veiled lady enthroned between two pillars and illuminated by the moon. She is the opposite of the Magician, quiet where he was loquacious, still where he was in motion, sitting while he stood, shrouded in the night where he was out in the bright of day. She is the High Priestess and she astonishes the Fool by knowing everything about him.

Dear Artists,

The Evergreen Cafe fills it's walls with a local Artist each month.
We are looking to assemble next years(2009) exhibition schedule.
We really want to step 2009 up a notch and show Baltimore's best.

About the Cafe:
This Roland Park cafe is never empty (packed at times) and caters to wealthy cliental.
Artists who have shown this past year, on average, have sold at least 2 pieces a show.
We have a feeling the number would increase if the art was even more phenomenal!
Also, there is no commission, we just want to expose great artists to the community.

The space has about 50 feet of wall space. it takes about 10-12 average size pieces (18in x 24in) to fill the space, but it really does depend on size.
We have a museum hanging wire system you can use.

Although two demential work is preferred, all types of work will be taken into consideration.

Accepted artists must to make Labels for all of their work: Title, date, medium, price, contact information.
And should have postcards/business cards to promote themselves and their show.

Get involved:
If you are interested in showing, visit the space to gage whether or not it would be a good venue to show your work.
We are located at 501 W. Coldspring Lane. Baltimore, MD 21210
Also take a look at our blog http://evergreenart. blogspot. com/

If you think your work would make a good fit at the Evergreen, visit our blog for further information on how to apply.

I hope you join us this year.
I look forward to hearing from you,
Thanks so much,
Irene

p.s.
If you know of any other artists who maybe interested in this opportunity, please feel free to forward this message to them!
