Customs. The thin line that protects our borders and regulates the flow of goods into this young country. For many years my brothers and I ran these docks and airports, a law unto ourselves. Whether bringing it in or shipping it out, we could make you rich or we could be your ruin. It was here that the music was born. Buried under crates of Peruvian coffee beans, sung by rare and endangered parrots smuggled from deep within the Amazon, nestled up against a suspicously mis-shaped boogie board cover bound for Indonesia. We found it in old wooden legs, leopard-skin pill-box hats and hollowed out walking sticks. We sung songs about the sea, merchant songs, songs of crime and punishment that never made it passed quarantine. We are the Custom Kings, ask anyone.

カスタムキングについて

地平線の彼方に広がる、広大な青い空。どこまでも続く美しい海岸線。ギラギラ光る太陽の下で、波に乗るスリルを求めるサーファーたち。終わりのない夏。そんな、自由を求める人々が集まる南半球の大陸、オーストラリア。そして、そんな人たちのためにサウンドトラックを作り続ける、数々のバンドたち。メルボルン郊外の５人の友人が結成した、カスタムキングはそんなバンドの中でも、現在、オーストラリアで一段と注目を集めている期待の新星。結成以来、精力的な国内ライブ活動、２枚のEPリリース、数々の野外ライブフェスを経て、２００７年５月、満を期して待望のデビューアルバムをリリース。デビューアルバム“アット　シー”は、ジャンルにとらわれず、ポップ、レゲイ、ソウル、フォーク、ヒップホップ、そして、ロックンロールの影響を、彼らなりに消化した、カスタムキングならではの、ユニークな音を詰め込んだ、爽快な作品。 “アット　シー”は、オーストラリア全国ラジオ放送局“Triple J”のヒットアルバムになり、カスタムキングの人気は揺るぎないものとなる。

オーストラリア国内での人気を確立したカスタムキングは、２００９年３月、遂に、グランドコンポーネントなどの、人気メルボルンバンドのCDリリースで注目を集めているP-Vineより、日本国内リリース決定。日本でのアルバムリリースと同時に、カスタムキングは日本初の国内ツアーを発表。　

彼らのライブを見るたびに、私はなぜか、夏のビーチパーティーを思い起こさせられる。彼らのリラックスした、爽快なライブでは、我を忘れ、夏のビーチパーティーにいるみたいに、彼らの曲に笑顔で踊っている自分を見つける人が、多いのではないだろうか。そして、パーティーからの帰り道、なぜか少しだけ幸せになった、自分に気がつくかもしれない。そして、“カスタムキングなしでは、パーティーは始まらない”って、心の中で静かに、つぶやくかもしれない。
