Interests

  • General

    The shop offers:

    • USED BICYCLE SALES: We always have about 200 bikes for sale that were generously donated by people like you. Sales support our program growth and bikes are sold as-is or tuned-up! All purchased bikes come with 30 days of full repair coverage, 90 days of free adjustments and 10% all accessories!
    • BIKE DONATION CENTER: We accept working bikes, parts in excellent condition only and goodies like sports equipment, and lots more! The shop receives over 1000 bikes a year! Unfortunately, we are unable to accept used tires and tubes, and will only accept rare or higher-end wheels. Please deliver any donations to staff of the shop or APC. Please do not leave donations outside the shop for any reason. Thanks for the understanding and support!
    • VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: Got skills that you're able to contribute? The shop thrives because of its volunteers. Skilled bike mechanics, community bike people, artists, marketers, tech people, outreach personalities, fundraisers, and?? get in touch and explore our volunteer program! You can also earn credits by volunteering, which can be used to purchase donated goodies in the shop! If interested, please email bikeshop@apcollaborative.org.
    • EARN A BIKE PROGRAM: Volunteer in exchange for credits used to earn bikes and parts.
    • COMMUNITY REPAIR SHOP: 6 bike stands and a full range of bicycle tools can be used in the shop to help you do your own repairs. Usually there's staff and volunteers to help others learn the repair themselves. We ask for a $5 or 5 credit per hour donation to use the shop for personal repairs.
    • JOB TRAINING AND INTERNSHIPS: APC residents are employed to experience on-the-job training in how to operate many parts of the bike shop! People 11-15 can apply to contribute as unpaid youth interns, too!
    • COMMUNITY CENTER: The bike shop is a place for people to share space together in a safe, open and constructive space.

    Come by for a visit!

Hmmmm, Major Taylor was/is definitely an unsung pathbreaker of racial and athletic limitations at the turn of the 19th century. Learn more here.
Also, Thich Nhat Hanh, who among many things, may have been the first monk to ride bikes in Vietnam, which is now common, according to TNH. Also, TNH is promoting car-free travel choices to reverse the process of global warming! Click to learn more!

WHO WE ARE
Cycles of Change APC is a friendly non-profit community bicycle shop which opened in June 2006. It's mission is to empower local communities by providing outstanding recycled bicycle services in a safe, thriving, creative and self-sustaining space. Services include used bike sales, youth and adult job training, bicycle field trips, a community do-it-together repair shop, volunteer opportunities, and much more!

It is a collaboration between Cycles of Change, a 10 year old East Bay youth bike education program, and Alameda Point Collaborative (APC), a non-profit which manages housing and services for a 200 unit residential community comprised of 500 formerly homeless adults and families.

In 2007, we won "Best Bike Shop" from the East Bay Express! Click to read the write-up.
And, here's a story about the shop in the Alameda Sun... Click to read the article.
And here's the shop's Yelp! page: Go to Yelp! Cycles of Change APC Bike Shop

We're also part of a story in the Oakland Tribune called "Alameda Point Thrives Despite Blight", but you have to pay the Tribune to see it! There is so much to uncover out here...

WHERE WE ARE
In the west end of the City of Alameda, Bay Area, California, on the former Alameda Naval Station, now known as Alameda Point. Click here for a googlemap to the shop!
