Gold Coast's The Daisycutters have always been one of the most unabashedly infectious groups to come out of Queensland. No exceptions are made on their second studio album Come Sweet Bullets as the quartet deliver their reliable but infectious hooks while exploring something more sonically ambitious in the mix. The help of Powderfingers's Darren Middleton, additional layers of guitars and experimental arrangements make this a unique Daisycutters experience.
Cameron Wilson's songwriting remains top shelf and his staple lyrical mix of the soul-baring, autobiographical and the witty are as present as ever, 'We Used To Be Lovers...Until Something Went Terribly Wrong', 'It Looks Like I'll Be Going Home Alone Again Tonight' and 'If Today Was a Movie I'd Be Slashing The Seats' are all testament to this as they touch on everything from a normal bad day, rejection and yet another failed relationship. The opening 'Your Place Or Mine?' adds something of a Britpop flavour to proceedings, while 'You Break It You Buy It' and I Don't Want To Be Who You Are' proves that Wilson's hooks are as sharp as ever. 'A Little Assembly' and 'Like They Do On TV' sees the group slow it down with hearts vissibly on their sleeves - "You look about as good as I feel/About a millimetre from dead" Wilson sings on a heartfelt rock ballad longing for some sort of television fantasy.
The Daisycutters haven't really changed their musical ethos throughout their entire career, but this is exactly what makes them great. The songs are still conplete gold and the group sound as fresher as ever, like a band who's jumped right out of the garage and onto the record.

Fans At the Paul Weller shows in Brisbane last week got more than they bargined for with support band The Daisycutters. They received generous response from the audience, who usually are more likely to talk to their friends and line up for beers than check out the support act. Granted, a Weller audience is perfect for The Daisycutters - also fired by the classic Brit bands of the '60s and a healthy dose of sweet soul music - but songs as good as those on the second album demand attention. The Gold Coast-based quartet have actually been together for ten years, and this collection shows considerable growth. Cameron Wilson can still write sharp, melodic songs - see I Don't Want To Be Who Your Are and It Looks Like I'll Be Going Home Alone Again Tonight - but that's just part of the story.
Opening track Your Place Or Mine? is like one of those Wall of Guitars epics that Oasis turn out when they are on song, with stinging lead guitar from Kieran Clair. That agression contrasts with the Beatles-y piano pop of Come Around and the slow-burn of Someone Else Will Watch You Sleep Tonight. But two of the best tracks are saved for the end in Like They Do On TV and We Used to Be Lovers...Until Something Went Horribly Wrong. They are the two sides of the eternal quest for love, but they also demonstrate a band that has grown beyond the sum of their influences, sounding like no one as much as The Daisycutters.
