CHANNEL SURFING: Shorewood High School grad Dan Zweben is the voice behind "This Old Life," a song on the premiere of ABC's "October Road," at 9 tonight on Channel 12. A second song, "Back to Oregon," airs on next week's episode.
"Soundtrack by New York/LA rocker Dan Zweben, whose songs have also been featured on Jennifer Love Hewitt's new show Ghost Whisperer...so, uh, yeah, dude gets around. I think the song featured in Obama's ad is "Oregon," which you can hear on Zweben's MySpace page."

Song: "Oregon"
Artist: Dan Zweben
Genre: Folk/Rock
"Of all of these songs, this would be the one I would most recommend you guys to check out because he is of the up-and-coming whereas Boston, Thin Lizzy, Culture Club... they've already made their mark on the world. "Oregon" is in a much different vein from these other songs; all modern and folk-rocky. Dan Zweben is more Jeremy Fisher, less REO Speedwagon (which is, incidentally, another song featured on October Road). So yes, check out it out."

"During this past Sunday's Superbowl, Obama ran an ad that aired in about 20 states, as it was funded on a state-by-state basis (and cost $250,000 instead of a national ad which costs $2.5 million), aimed at a younger demographic as it featured shots of young folks in the crowd cheering Obama on while also playing the music of Dan Zweben. Never heard of him and I followed up on this… Zweben only has approximately 2,000 friends on MySpace. Not exactly Fleetwood Mac status or anything like it, but pretty interesting that I was actually introduced to a new musician through a commercial for a presidential hopeful. Nicely played, Ba-Rock."

In These Times, by Dan Zweben

For years, the musical faithful of melodically over-endowed acts like Cheap Trick, The Pretenders, and Jonathan Richman were confused and bewildered by the failure of modern day power pop to carry on the legacy in this post-Beatles era. But the thing is, it did happen. Pop music conquered the airwaves once again, but it was in the form of Disney singers and tweener bands.
Dan Zweben is a singer/songwriter and guitarist who answers the question, "Where is all the good, catchy pop music?" Zweben is both a rocker and a folk artist, playing up this contrast on his latest EP, In These Times. He allows his breezy voice to linger on lyrics that hint darkly at themes of loss, pain, and general human regret. The music behind those arresting words takes even more daring twists: as great as Zweben croons with a sugary harmony arrangement, prepare yourself to be surprised within moments by one of his vicious guitar riffs.
In the feel good tune, "Safe With Me," the narrator confesses the long road, although still bumpy, will be better together. When Zweben sings, "We hit a rough patch/ now it's green grass/ rolling in the sun," it’s easy to believe in this hard earned love affair. The song is beautiful, its lyrics about a leap of faith in the tradition of Townes Van Zandt's "If I Needed You." With catchy hooks and melodies, it also has the feel of George Harrison's "Cloud Nine," a smart pop song that’s completely infectious. The standout track, however, is the heartbreaking, "You Don't Have To Love Me." A lesser singer would perhaps drown in sentimental ooze, but Zweben makes a very mature story about two adults who have realized their love is finally over.
Dan Zweben's music has recently been featured on television shows such as, "October Road," "Smallville," "Ghost Whisperer," and MTV's "The Real World." His music video for "You Don't Have To Love Me" (starring Law and Order: SVU actress Michaela McManus) was selected for The Hollywood East Film Festival.

Redlemon and New Social Voyeurs is taking a stand again! We are very proud to release our brand new pro-love and pro-gay marriage music video for "Fly"! The song features the amazing saxophone of Jay Davidson (who plays with Whitney Houston, Cinderella, Tower of Power, and many others), and the amazing vocals of Charlene Holloway (Chaka Khan and many others), and Sonya Klinger (an up-and-coming wunderkind who hits and holds the amazingly moving high note at the end!).
In a blatant attempt at agitprop mass manipulation, the music video features incredibly cute photographs of cats, kittens, dogs, and puppies, as well as evocative photographs supporting the long-time historical existence of gay marriage from Creative Commons. Some of the historical images point to past instances of church-administered gay marriages and well-known gay married saints. From Redlemon, "Fly (the End of Wars)", on iTunes, and on MySpace under NewSocialVoyeurs.

DJ Monkey …soul-stirring, excitingly edgy music…just disturbing (read ‘mind-f**king’) enough to demand attention. There is a whole spice rack of auditory flavors here, served up like fractured poetry on a collection of intensely listenable Hallmark cards from Hell.
