Interests

  • General

Genealogy, sports, music. I love sports, a real wide variety from the traditional baseball and football to what some call "minor sports." I'm a big fan of track, wrestling, volleyball. I'm currently Sports Director for KBIA radio and a reporter for Official Sports Report, www.officialsportsreport.com.
  • Music

What's more important in life? I love music so much, and have very diverse tastes in music. Check back often, I'm going to update this jukebox very often. Lately I've been in this funk/soul mood, lots of 70s Commodores and stuff like that. I love early jazz, rock, classical, country (especially older country) I'll also put up videos of some of my favorites here, and change them out pretty regularly. Here are videos for a couple of tunes I really love...one's a rap song in German (yeah, I listen to some rap, and was doing so long before it became cool for suburban white kids to do so, I still have my Kurtis Blow LP!) and the other is a video about which I'm not crazy (I don't care for animal fighting) but the song's so beautiful it makes you want to weep, the fantastic Gipsy Kings and one of their first songs, as you can tell by the very cheap video made in Mexico before they became famous, "Sin Ella." And if you aren't careful, you might learn something before you're through... Here's one of my favorite records, "Il Ballo del Mattone" from 60s kiddie rock star Rita Pavone. Here's my buds Lizzie and Baba, singing one of my favorite tunes. They have a real live CD with this on it, but these guys sitting around giggling and just singing with their buds in the backyard is the way I really think of them, and love them best. You guys are great!! (Search for Lizzie West and the White Buffalo on Youtube and find lotsa stuff, or go to my friends list, or go see them in a show or buy a CD or somethin'!)
  • Movies

Lately I've really been big into old movies, Turner Classic Movie Channel is a favorite. I love old comedies, light stuff like "Philadelphia Story" or Marx Brothers. I also love some of the old silent films from Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton, and one of my favorites is an old Paul Muni movie called "The Last Angry Man." You should look it up! As for going to the theatre, not so much. I mean, I like them but don't go that much. I also enjoy Urban Cowboy (quit laughin!) and some of the old predictable sports movies like "Field of Dreams" and "Hoosiers." "Raising Arizona" I could see 100 times and it never gets old. The old Monty Python movies are sometimes really hilarious, sometimes it's just not what I'm in the mood for.
  • Television

Fox Soccer Channel, all sorts of sports, MASH re-runs, cop shows, old movies, Military Channel, lots of stuff on PBS. I own every season of "West Wing" on DVD yet watch almost nothing on prime time network TV. Really I think most TV is mindless dreck, and I lived quite happily without TV for some time before I got married. Were it not needed for baseball and soccer and football and track, I'd probably be ready to put ours out at the curb...some of what my kids watch makes me sure television should just be banned.
  • Books

Non-fiction, sports, bios...I read magazines a lot, and about 6 newspapers a day, so not a lot of time for books. I also love comic strip collections and have lots of those, my favorites are "Mutts," "Get Fuzzy," "Lucky Cow," "For Better or For Worse," "Zits," and "Fox Trot."
  • Heroes

My dad and mom, my wife, my brother and sister, my grandfather Roberts, Jesus, and a bunch of other folks. I have a great admiration for those in public service, especially cops and fire fighters and teachers and ministers and...contrary to the popular culture these days...I have a lot of respect for anyone who's willing to serve their community state and nation in elective office. I'm a strong Democrat, but Republicans aren't the enemy...cynacism and apathy are the enemy.
My ancestors and family! Here's my list of surnames being researched, if you belong to any of these families, drop me a line, we might be related!!: Hellwege, Roberts, Wendt, Ott, Schroeder, Klamm, Bullinger, Hoefelmann, Schlosser, Stanley, Patterson, Harder, Horner, Dickson, Doshier, Bean, Russell, Holder, Lancaster, Sparks, Pritchett, Elkins, Rea, Hamm, Koeser, Schmidt, Schliching, Stoltzfusz, Volleners, Boose, Droyer, Fauk, Kolsher, Ahrens, Ossenbrugge, Junge, Hoop, Wulff, Duttra, Ebert, Bechtold, Christ, Werth, Koob, Marx, Febinger, Lawson, James, Wright, Dougherty, Gilmore, Harris, Cox, Cary, Pascoe, Heard, Wilson, Norris, Campbell, Perry, Powell, Holt, Allred, Cheney, Fallin, Hamilton...and yeah, there's plenty more but that'll give you an idea. As you can tell from half those names, my dad's family is from Germany, Butzfleth and Grossenkneten, to be exact. Mom's family is of English/Irish/Scottish/French/German background, like many Americans, and many have been in the US since the 1600s, and in the southern US almost entirely. I've said before my ethnic background is "Half German, Half Hillbilly" and I'm very interested in southern history and the War Between the States.

About me:

Every time I write these, I like what I do, then look at the page and go "Whoa, that's way too long" so here's the brief version. I'm the morning announcer at KBIA-FM, a public radio station in Columbia, MO. ..
I also work for the Official Sports Report, a service for MU Tigers fans with lots of football and basketball information. I'm involved in a lot of community stuff, I work on OneRead and Canstruction and for Voluntary Action Center. I'm on the Campus Safety Committee at Mizzou. I'm a proud Okie! Born in Stillwater and grew up in Edmond, I've been in Missouri for 20 years but Oklahoma still feels like home for me. ..
I'm an active member of First Christian Church, and a life-long part of the Christian Church (Disiples of Christ) I'm pretty liberal as far as Christian doctrine goes, but I like a traditional church service and love the old favorite hymns.
..
I'm also a proud Democrat! I've been campaign chair for Senator Chuck Graham, and was a delegate to state Democratic conventions in Oklahoma (for Gary Hart) and Missouri (for Bill Clinton) Right now I'm supporting Hillary Clinton for president.

Who I'd like to meet:

Heck, just about anyone. I enjoy finding new friends with whom I share any of my many and varied interests.

    Sorry Daddo,
Don't really listen to the radio lol
But no 2-a-days haven't been banned, we start next Friday. I'm not looking forward to them because I'm in pretty poor physical shape. I don't think I've been in this bad of shape since my freshmen year in high school. I didn't have enough structure in my summer so I didn't really work out consistently. Hopefully I won't be so out of shape that I lose my starting spot. Either way I'm still pretty excited about it because it IS Football! My summer has basically consisted of working, I've probably been averaging about 45 hours a week or so. 45 hours a week as a lifeguard in an indoor pool can leave a person dead tired, I've found out. Anyways How are you doing? And the kids? And bonnie? Are you gonna be coming to some games next year? We got a new field and I hear its pretty nice. Hopefully our team morale will also have a boost and we can win a few more games. Well hope to hear from you soon and see you this upcoming fall.
