   About David Batteau
DAVID BATTEAU - BIOGRAPHY

I am a singer/songwriter.

I’ve written for a lot of people including myself, from Spanky McFarlane of Spanky And Our Gang in the early 1970s to writing lyrics for Wladyslaw Szpilman, “The Pianist”, in the 21st century.

I was born on June 25th, 1949. My earliest memory is of my mother’s shining face.

One of my most important childhood memories is of singing cowboy-gospel songs to Jesus in outer space from my bed when I was five-years-old.

My first recurring nightmare started at five-years-old as well. An extraterrestrial of light was enthroned in my basement and was then transformed into a stone-bound evil king of sorts; like Superman's Bizarro. The dream would repeat itself in many guises throughout my childhood.

Five was a big year for me. At five, my family and I moved into our first, last and only house. That was in Cambridge, Massachusetts. My father was a professor at Harvard University.

I had an epiphany at twelve that I was a songwriter.

At seventeen I formed a duo with Tom Logan while attending prep school at Choate in Wallingford, Connecticut. It was the beginning of my career. Frank Sinatra paid for our demos.

My father, Dr. Dwight Wayne Batteau, died in the fall of 1967. He was working on a Man/Dolphin Communication Project for the U.S. Navy in Hawaii.

I attended Tufts University from 1968 to 1972. My mentor was Dr. Seymour Simches. He had been my father's best friend and colleague. Dr. Simches was also Governor Bill Richardson's mentor as an undergraduate at Tufts.

Jenny Jones and I were married in 1969. We had our first and only daughter, Yolande, in 1970. We had our first and only son, Christian, in 1974. Yolande and Christian are my greatest joys.

My brother, Robin Batteau, and I made a record, Batteaux, for Columbia Records in 1973.

That same year, 1973, I had my first hit with El Chicano's version of my song, "Tell Her She's Lovely". It went to number 1 on the West Coast and was Top 40 nationally.

I made a solo record, Happy In Hollywood, for A&M Records in 1976.

Jenny and I separated in 1977 and were divorced in 1980.

I had an epiphany at thirty-three. Jesus entered my room as a point of consciousness. He offered me an eternal relationship which I gratefully accepted. In that moment I was a Christian. Dr. Gene Scott was my spiritual father.

In 1985 I made a record with Tony Humecke and Eric Pressly, NOMO (The Great Unknown), for Atco Records.

I am most proud of my CD, “Soul Mission”, which I wrote and produced with Darrell Brown in 1993 for Myrrh Records. The legendary Steve Cropper ("Midnight Hour") and Booker T. (Booker T. & The MGs) were the core of the Soul Mission band. Tata Vega & Mavis Staples led the vocals. Darrell and I had won a Dove Award for Best Christian Rock Song in the late 1980s for our song "The River Unbroken".

I am also proud of the songs that I wrote and produced with Perla Batalla for her CDs “Mestiza I” in 1999 and “Mestiza II” in 2000. Amazon voted Mestiza I the best independent release of 1999.

Writing lyrics for the Wladyslaw Szpilman English language CD in 2002 was also one the proudest moments in my career. It felt historic in the shadow of "The Pianist" which went on to win three Academy Awards. "The Pianist" was Wladyslaw Szpilman's Holocaust survivor's story. Wladyslaw Szpilman was Poland's most celebrated songwriter.

On February 21st, 2005, my spiritual father, Dr. Gene Scott, died in Los Angeles.

In 2008, Larry Klein decided to champion me back into the business.

Dreams began to come true in February, 2009, with the release of Melinda Doolittle's "Coming Back to You" CD. My song, "Fundamental Things" shared the stage with songs by Robert Johnson and Sammy Cahn. I wrote it with Larry.

This record was followed in March, 2009, by Madeleine Peyroux's "Bare Bones" CD. Madeleine and I wrote three songs together for this record, two with Larry. I was brought into the project by Larry.

Madeleine's record was followed in May, 2009, with a CD by Luciana Souza called "Tide". Luciana and I and Larry wrote four together for the record. I was brought into the project by Larry.

Luciana's record will be followed by Raul Midon's CD to be released later this year, 2009. Raul, Larry and I wrote "These Wheels" for this record. I was brought into the project by Larry.

I am currently writing with Rebecca Pidgeon for her upcoming CD. I was introduced to Rebecca by Larry.

On June 25th, 2009, I celebrated my 60th birthday with my children in New York City. Life begins at 60 while I'm looking down the other end of the gun. I am blessed.

David Batteau – June 14, 2009

PS. I owe a debt of gratitude to Pythagoras, the Greek, Ziryab, the Mede, and Bach, the German, without whom there would be no modern American music.

I also owe a debt of gratitude to Moses, the Israelite, who wrote the Torah (the first five books of the Bible), the seventy Jewish scholars who organized and translated the Septuagint Bible, Paul, the Jewish Apostle, who wrote two-thirds of the New Testament, Martin Luther, the German, John Calvin, the Frenchman, and King James, the Englishman, without whom there would be no modern English language.

PPS. We all owe a debt of gratitude to those who shared with us their "Armor of God" in the turbulent 20th Century; for "The Shield of Faith", Dr Gene Scott (www.drgenescott.com), for "The Belt of Truth", C.S. Lewis (www.cslewis.org), for "The Breastplate of Righteousness", Reinhold Niebuhr (www.niebuhrsociety.org), and for our "feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace", Martin Buber (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_Buber). These four men, I believe, were the greatest souls of the 20th Century. Their legacy is our best future.

For "The Helmet of Salvation" I would recommend the Jesuits' JERUSALEM BIBLE with notes and a little help from J.R.R. Tolkien.

For "The Sword of Truth" in the 21st century, I would recommend my pastor, Melissa Scott (www.pastormelissascott.com). She's the best Bible teacher in the world, is literate in twenty-eight languages, both ancient and modern, and is gorgeous. It doesn't get better than her!

For recommended reading I would say "The Beginning Of Wisdom" by Leon R. Kass and "The Beginning Of Desire" by Avivah Gottlieb Zornberg. They are two of the best commentaries on the Book Of Genesis that I have ever read.

Faith = The ability to see the invisible,
to believe in the incredible and
that permits you to receive
what the masses call impossible

Thanks for adding me as a friend.

THX FOR THE ADD! VIENI A VEDERTI IL DIVERTENTISSIMO VIDEO DEL PRIMO SINGOLO DI SUSHY: PIOVE!!!
Kicksville

Apr 26 2009 4:42 PM

‘The Singles – Season 2’ is Kicksville’s most cohesive album, a recording featuring primarily the Kicksville City Council and contributions from members far and wide. But in typical Kicksville fashion, the songs on ‘Season 2’ run the gamut of genres, layered with crazy sounds, organic samples and recorded spoken word from legendary poet John Beecher (grandfather to Commissioner Conrad St. Clair).

This Week: Kalamaya:
Tani Diakite, the singer on Kalamaya, is from the Wassoulou region of Mali. The language he's singing in is Bambara (also called Bamanakan), and very roughly translated, Kalamaya means "it's not good to fight." The song was built around Tani's melody and kamale ngoni (African harp, like a cora but smaller), but since Tani makes this stuff up on the fly, the final version is very much Kicksville-ized...there isn't much structure to Tani's open-ended jamming/improv.
And forget about getting him to do the same thing twice ;-)

The Music:
Tani's melody is incredibly haunting and beautiful - the main goal when arranging this song was to stay out of its way! Andy Ewen's guitar part (the main riff through the song) really adds a nice touch of old-school R&B, and Chris Huntington's flowing Afro-pop lines in the bridge provide an interesting contrast.
Spice it up with some airy synth textures and a 1974 Buick hubcap strapped on top of a snare drum, and you've got a song!

Thank you for the add. The "Soul Mission" album is awesome! Some time ago, I read a rumor on the web that there might have been a follow-up album. What happened to that? If it was recorded and lies dormant in some archive somewhere: it deserves to be heard!
Thank you for writing these tunes.
Kudos
