DJ David Medina's Interests
General
Music, Art, Spirit, Peace.
Music
I like and play just about everything. I was once upon a time into punk, ska and industrial music. Later, I went straight to my roots and fell in love with old skool Dominican music. I soon discovered the greatness of Cuban, African and Brasilian music. Some of my favorite artists include: Otis Redding, Stevie Wonder, Silvio Rodriguez, Los Van Van, Joseito Mateo, Salif Keita and Timbalada!
Movies
Sci Fi and international films. Black Orpheus and Seven Samurai are my top favorite films.
Television
Not much... Well, Star Trek: The Next Generation reruns and The Daily Show.
Books
The Alchemist, Four Yoruba Rituals, Illusions, Drown, Episodes of the Cuban Revolutionary War by Che Guevara, Mixed Blessings, Face of the Gods, The Book of Five Rings by Miyamoto Musashi, Hagakure, Pedro Paramo, Cien Años De Soledad, Black Elk Speaks, The Complete Conversations with God, Lone Wolf & Cub, all Frank Miller Daredevil stories and of course, The Dark Knight Returns.
Heroes
my Dad, Ghandi, The Silver Surfer. This makes sense to me, though.
About me: DJ DAVID MEDINA
www.djmedina.com
David Medina, the son of Spanish-speaking Dominican parents, was raised in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn long before it became a haven for the bohemian, the artsy and the upwardly mobile. Hardly a stereotypical second generation Latino, from early on Medina’s taste in music ranged from punk rock to salsa and his sensitivity for quality and culture vs. mainstream was always his trademark. He began deejaying while working toward a BFA at Alfred University, finding two creative outlets that would continue to play a major role in his life – music and sculpture.
Medina completed a BFA degree in three-dimensional studies with a concentration in glass and has had considerable success showing his work in museums and galleries. Some of the institutions that have exhibited his work include The Brooklyn Museum, Heller Gallery, NYC, The Museum of Modern Art in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, The Museum Of Contemporary Art in Caracas, Venezuela and The Caribbean Cultural Center in NYC. Inspired by his father, Uriaster Medina a professional folkloric dancer and conga player, Medina continues to work as a professional Latin and World music DJ. Considered a musicologist by many, DJ David Medina has been spinning Cuban, Brazilian, African, Tropical and World Music in New York City since 1995. His passion for Cuban music has led him to be among the foremost expert DJ’s in the music of the island, which receives little or no airplay and is rarely played in clubs throughout the United States.
From 1995 to present, DJ David Medina has spun at private parties, lounges and clubs as far as Australia and Brazil. These include SOB’s, Satalla, Village Underground, IL Pirata and El Rincon in San Francisco, Bembe in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Baraza in the Lower East Side, NYC, Bar da Praia in Bahia, Brazil and Café de La Salsa in Sydney. From 1998 to 2004, he was the DJ at the legendary “Cubansoul” Wednesdays at Nell’s. Medina has been working with Havanarumba since 1999 and continues to DJ the Thursday night parties first started at La Belle Epoque and now at Star 64 in NYC. DJ David Medina has also been the guest DJ for renowned bands such as Los Van Van (Hammerstein Ballroom 2001), Los Fakires (SOB’s 2002), Ricardo Lemvo (Satalla 2005), and many more. In addition he has opened for or alternated with a multitude of Latin American and New York based groups which include: Oscar DeLeon, Salsa Celtica from Scotland, Raices Habaneras, Tiempo Libre (Miami), La Timba Loca, Joseito Mateo from the Dominican Republic and salsa greats: Andy Montañez, Hector Casanova, Nelson Gonzalez, Jimmy Bosch, Alfredo de la Fe, Nicky Marrero and Pupi Lagarretta to name a few . He continues to be a guest DJ every summer at Lincoln Center’s Midsummer Night Swing concert series.
