First and foremost my grandfather Herbert Marshall, and my uncle Herbert Marshall Jr. who were beautiful and anonymous musicians and an incredible inspiration in the beginning. . . . Billy Strayhorn, August Wilson, Andy Warhol, Ishmael Reed,Chris Ofili, Dilla (the man , the myth), Jean Michel Basquiat, Carl Hancock Rux, Gil Scott Heron, Questlove, Rich Medina, Mos Def, Eric Dolphy, David Ruffin, Don Cornelius, Marvin Gaye, A Tribe Called Quest, Sherman Alexie, Weldon Irvine, Gregory Hines, Langston Hughes.
From murals to music, from poetry slams to theatre, from beats to rhymes, Pittsburgh native Davu is a multidisciplinary artist constantly searching for new ways of expression. He has performed his original brand of poetry and hip-hop throughout the U.S. and abroad, appearing at CBGB's, The Andy Warhol Museum, The Nuyorican Poets Cafe, the Toronto International Poetry Slam, as well as London and South Africa. He has shared stages with Sekou Sundiata, Saul Williams, Ursula Rucker, and Camp Lo. He's interviewed KRS 1 and has been anthologized in "Bum Rush the Page: A Def Poetry Jam" (Random House). He has published two chapbooks of poetry as well as receivied a 2001 Pennsylvania Council on the Arts grant. Davu's 2006 hip-hop album, "The Sun Do Move", can currently be found for sale in the U.S, France, Germany, Japan, Belgium, and The Netherlands. On his upcoming record VU's Moods, Davu handles the production duties on an 11 song album that is his most expressive to date. Backed by his own revolving band of gypsies, Fly Zombi, Davu's live shows careen from soul to rock to hip-hop to broken beat. Whether rocking a poetry reading, spinning a club, or singing a song, Davu is a renaissance man of the highest order!!
