Danny Castro
-Born: 1/1/74
-Lives: New York City
-Strives for: Lyricist Lounge...
Born and raised in the Lower East Side of New York City, Danny Castro has always been inspired by his strong single mother of two boys. She went from struggling and juggling college and raising kids on welfare, to getting her masters degree in Special Education. She then became director of a Head Start program at University Settlement Day Care Center. His mom was his first mentor in life, and she showed him by example that embracing and educating the youth is the key to a better future for our communities.
At the age of 16, he co-founded one of the most vital youth and community-based institutions of Hip-Hop culture, the Lyricist Lounge. As the Lounge gained popularity, Castro continued to be an innovator, increasing visibility for artists that take skills and creativity to new levels. Since the beginning years of Lyricist Lounge, he has scouted talent for all artist showcases, and served as an executive producer for the compilation albums Lyricist Lounge: Volumes 1 & 2. He has also executive produced and A&R directed the Underground Airplay Compilation. Beyond just having a gifted ear, Castro has been the Promotions Coordinator and Producer of all Lyricist Lounge events and tours. In 1997 Lyricist Lounge produced a series of sold out shows in New York City, and record labels started to see the Lounge as the tastemakers and trendsetters of New York Hip-Hop. The Lounge took advantage of the opportunity, and began a street promotion division of the company. Castro served as Promotions Coordinator for the street team in addition to soliciting such clients as Sony Music, Loud Records, Naughty Wear, and Rawkus Records to name a few.
During the making of Lyricist Lounge Vol. 1, Danny was responsible for coordinating the rhyme skits in between the songs of the album. The skits featured various artists in improvisational scenes, which sparked the idea for the Lyricist Lounge Show on MTV. Lyricist Lounge has always been a community-oriented organization, concerned with empowerment of artists as much as the success of the business. Artists have always been able to come to the Lounge office for career guidance and creative consultation. Castro filled the role of creative consultant, developing artists and offering strategic advice for success in the music industry. In the future Danny plans to continue to work as an Executive Producer, Promotions Coordinator, and Consultant for Artists. He also plans to start writing the screenplays for a film that will be produced by Lyricist Lounge. In addition, Danny plans to pursue further education in finance and Spanish, to expand his work in the Latino population.
