Christmas 2003, Barcelona — 3,000 hardcore fans witness the spectacle that is Death in Vegas live, as the group closes out a triumphant year marked by the release of its opus Scorpio Rising. It’s a moment of great import, and a hint of things to come. The lid comes fully off when DiV lynchpin Richard Fearless road tests “Ein Fur Die Damen,” the song that will soon become the lead track on the first album from a newly envisioned Death in Vegas: Satan’s Circus. Little could Fearless and co-conspirator Tim Holmes guess that they were about to part company with their label of ten years and start, but never finish, the next rock/dance album everyone wanted to hear.
A year later and Death in Vegas are embarking on their fourth album campaign — and everything has changed. The act’s first release on U.S. label The Lab, Satan’s Circus all about the group itself: no scene-stealing guest appearances by the likes of superstars such as Iggy Pop and Liam Gallagher as on previous releases; just the brilliantly subtle electronic production and organic instrumentation that defines Fearless and Holmes as both producers and musicians.
While the release represents a departure from recent DiV albums, it also undoubtedly marks a progression for a band that has always set both rock and dance benchmarks. Driven by a decidedly German influence, the disc pays homage to some of the most influential progenitors of modern electronic music — acts such as the much-loved Kraftwerk and Neu! — while also harking back to the aesthetic of the duo’s first album, 1997’s mesmerizing Dead Elvis.
Ranging from narcotic transcendence (“Heil Xanax”) and mind-bending dub (“Black Lead”) to more recently explored (but nonetheless ominous) instrument-driven territory (“Head”), the album will be released as a double-CD package — also including the stunning Live at Brixton disc. Featuring onstage renditions of the numerous highlights of the band’s career to date, this bonus is one way to experience a taste of the magic all those Spanish fans experienced back in 2003.
But it won’t stop with just a taste. All the hedonism of the Death in Vegas live show will soon return, with a string of dates supporting the U.S. release of Satan’s Circus. Stripped back to bass and keyboards alone, the group is also bringing a fresh approach to the live format — expect nothing less than the dark, delirious journey under the big top that the album’s title promises.
