Anyone who has ever fallen in love with music knows that the climb to the top is entirely uphill. However, destined by fate, it was the only life that rising star Deesha imagined. From the moment she picked up a microphone, Deesha knew her struggle to the top would be tough one. I was a loner, the young siren recalls, I always felt like I was on the outside looking in. Growing up in the diverse musical metropolis of Toronto, Deesha began her love affair with music at a very young age. A creative soul from birth, Deesha garnered all of her musical energy to constantly pen lyrics while practicing songs and dance moves for her family. Music was her outlet and without it she was incomplete. Her idols were Whitney Houston and Mary J. Blige, with whom she would sing along to in the acoustics of her bathroom. Despite her raw talent and star qualities, Deesha frequently kept to herself. Being that loner kid kind of helped me adapt to this industry and develop a thick skin, she advises. As she matured, Deesha channeled her naturally creative energy and combined it with her love of R&B. The result was a well rounded musician with a sound all her own. With years of experience and hard work, Deesha is geared for the release of her debut album, Life Less Ordinary; self-written and co-produced by the young mastermind herself.
In the early years of Deeshas career, she was featured on a number of South Asian compilations, including Tauba Tauba, Jagga Jat , and The Massacre. The releases spanned the globe and featured some of the finest artists in South Asian music. Deeshas undeniable soul and soothing sound blessed every track she was featured on. In the interim, her first single Dried My Eyes met the radio and video world. Dried My Eyes was not only featured on Canadas MuchMusic, but also received frequent airplay on KISS 92.5 (Torontos largest commercial station) and CBC Radio, as well as a number of compilation spots (mp3.coms Urban Music Compilation, GarageBand Records R&B Evolved, Best of R&B).
Deesha then received airplay on two US commercial radio stations with Get Outta My Life on New Yorks Z-100 and Why Cant We Go Back San Diegos Jammin Z90; not bad for an artist working independently to pursue her dream. It became abundantly clear that once the mainstream audiences ears met Deeshas voice, the connection was permanent. Navigating through numerous part-time jobs and recording, Deesha poured every penny and ounce of her soul into making music.
It wasnt as though her talent went unnoticed. Labels, management companies, and other representatives of the industry approached Deesha to work with her. There was nothing most offered that Deesha hadnt already managed on her own, so she survived as a self-contained entity wearing every hat to further her career. Frequently falling victim to empty promises and pretenses, Deeshas unbridled spirit kept her strong on her solo mission. She nurtured her undeniable spark and persevered as a starving artist in this fickle music industry.
By the year 2003, Deesha began to witness the fruits of her labor. Her single Falling In Love became an instant summer anthem in Canada, and broke the Top 30 charts with a video to match. Remaining true to her love of urban music, Deesha continued to constantly write and collaborate with endless emcees. Her collaboration with Canadian rapper Arabesque on Stardust in 2005 became a heavily rotated single and video that still spins to date.
By the beginning of 2006, Deesha had independently released 2 singles, won several songwriting competition accolades, written for a major label artist, and had become a constant on MTVDesi. Having hosted and performed on the Live from Puerto Rico special, as well as Maximum Party, MTV Desi aired a feature story on Deesha, along with a segment on their Top 10 Desi Countdown. Deesha has seen more radio and television success than some artists with major label record deals.
The stage is now set for this rising star to claim her well-deserved spot as a household name. Armed with talent and an unmatched drive, Deesha will undoubtedly make serious noise in this business of music. With a résumé like this, its only right that she named her musical offspring Life Less Ordinary.
Life Less Ordinary is a collection of songs revealing Deeshas commercially appealing sound mixed with her natural born gift of ballads. Channeling the soul of R&B infused with her own magic, Deeshas style is comparable to none. Songs like the crunk anthem Let Your Freak Out will surely move the masses as the heartfelt Tell Me reveals a depth and emotion behind her lyrics. Her feelings behind every song are completely genuine and indicative of a young woman that has made her way to the top alone. Geared by talent, passion, and the refusal to take no for an answer, the future looks bright as Deesha pursues her love of music. Its just a part of me, she simply states. As corny and as predictable as that sounds, its just who I am.
