.. 20 years already. That’s reasons enough for De Kift to step into a year swirling with festivities. We treated ourselves to a vinylsinglesproject with five befriended bands. On the singles, they cover one of our songs, and we cover one of theirs. The last one, with Franz Ferdinand, is coming up. Before them, Calexico, Zita Swoon, Monofocus and De Rondos covered our songs in their own special ways.
And that’s not all. Because there’s no celebration without pictures, we recently released DOKA: a book filled with pictures taken of De Kift by Erik Christenhusz. For nearly three years photographer Erik Christenhusz has searched for De Kift's essence, literally through the viewfinder of his analogue camera. In his attic, he saw the images come together in the stop bath. And each time, he got a little closer to the soul.
The extensive birthday festivities started in 2008 with the release of Hoofdkaas. A sizzling Kift-cocktail with a salty edge made from all the ingredients accumulated over the years in De Kift’s kitchen. And that’s not just the masterly pots- and panmusic mixed with brass band tooters and choppy guitars that De Kift has successfully patented for years on end. No, there’s more! A colourful mix of songs about eating and drinking, wine cake and ale soup, hornpiping and pogo-ing. There is eating and drinking, laughing and weeping, singing and dancing. Lovesongs in a swirling Kift-merry-go-round.
Twenty years ago, that roundabout knew a precisely measured and bouncing take-off, resulting in the Yverzucht lp (1989). It was followed by growing success with the enthusiasts (Krankenhaus, 1993), and via the fortunes of the hibernators at Nova Zembla (Gaaphonger, 1996) De Kift completes the nineties with the countryside saga of Vlaskoorts (1999). In 2001, they celebrated their anniversary of twelve and a half years with Kopers. Then, they continued with great ease to the world of opera by way of Russian absurdist Daniil Charms (Vier voor Vier, 2003). 7 (2006) is again inspired by Russian poets.
