Beneath the flickering neon lights of a cinema well past its prime, three young workers yearned for something more. They dreamed of a world beyond sticky floors, popcorn spills, and the tearing of countless ticket stubs. Unified in their search, they formed a friendship that would ultimately lead to the formation of a band.
After exploring their newfound means of expression for some time, the three boys felt as though something was missing. Turning to the World Wide Web, they found salvation in the gift of a fourth member. Two auditions were scheduled on a sweaty December night in 2005, and after the first pained through a rendition of Foo Fighters ‘Monkey Wrench’ they decided to go with the other guy. Thus was the birth of ‘Detective Social’; a Melbourne based band endeavouring to share their love of music with the world.
Armed with a simple yet affecting approach to song writing, their music tells stories of love, loss, hope and exploration. Precise and inventive beats harmonize with melodically driven bass lines while the lead guitar arrangements, sweet in their subtlety, dance amidst rich, heartfelt chord progressions. Insightful lyrics, delivered with a passionate and endearing sincerity, are complimented with lush vocal harmonies. These elements unite to form a majestic canvas of sound, arriving with instant charm- a familiar stranger at your door- leaving with a profound resonance that lingers long after the final notes have faded. Without the fickleness or cliché that constrains so many modern musicians, Detective Social have the ability to transcend any feeling, theme or disposition, in a style that is ever relevant, accessible and deeply compelling.
Having spent the last three years devotedly playing shows around Melbourne, the lads have gained a loyal following and are known well by Melbourne‘s top live venues and artists. In the second half of 2008 they headed into the studio to record the much-anticipated debut EP ‘Tiny Victories’, which has recently received some national airtime on Triple J. Following it up with a sell out launch performance at Revolver Upstairs, the band then embarked on the ‘Tiny Victories Tour’ taking them to Wollongong, Newcastle, Sydney, Bendigo, Geelong and Belgrave.
Playing to over twenty different audiences in 2008 alone, Detective Social have well and truly proved they are no passing fad, on the contrary, a band willing and ready to sail the vast and stormy waters of their convictions. With eyes wide to a bright future, this is most definitely a band to watch.
