DE/VISION are a band who require no introduction to the pop music audience. After all, this electro duo has been among the leading representatives of its genre for almost twenty years and has always nonchalantly succeeded in reinventing itself during that time, exploring the limitations of its full potential and filling the much-abused term of "crossover" with exciting new contents. That a previously established band structure may fall apart in the process of these frequently daring experimental phases must unfortunately be considered one of the imponderabilities of an eventful biography.
This kind of break hit DE/VISION at the turn of the millennium, having produced successful, extremely likable synth pop music that had attracted the attention of major label WEA, who went on to release two albums, "Monosex" and "Void", which laid the band's sonic range wide open at the end of the nineties. Suddenly guitars were no longer frowned upon by purist electro heads, and a lot of experimentation went on in the wide field of electronic means of expression. This rejuvenation process, however, turned into a tightrope walk that founder member Markus was no longer prepared to be a part of. He left the group, while Thomas and Steffen not only moved on to the "big" independent label, Drakkar, but also returned to their old strengths with their 2001 release, "Two".
In the meantime, DE/VISION have found their course again without losing sight of their feel for new sounds and experimentation. Their constant open-mindedness towards new influences and forms of expression is without doubt one of the fundamental factors in the recipe for success of a band who has gone on to produce on albums such as "Devolution" (2003), "6 Feet Underground" (2004) and "Subkutan" (2005) a wide range of exceptionally gifted pop anthems, most of which resurfaced on last year's "Best Of …". That album also included the exclusive "Love Will Find A Way", recorded specifically for the compilation and Thomas and Steffen's first real compositional collaboration with their much-appreciated production team consisting of Schumann & Bach; which worked so well that the new album, featuring the interesting title "NOOB", was recorded entirely by this tried and tested gang of four. This also explains the title, which Steffen borrowed from computer gaming jargon, where it is used to describe a greenhorn gamer, or as a derogatory term for an experienced gamer who's made a beginner's mistake. "We're always looking for words that people will hopefully find interesting, but that on the other hand also relate to us," frontman Steffen explains. "NOOB was my idea because I surf the Internet a lot and sometimes get in involved in role-playing games. To start off with, I liked the sound of the term without knowing what it actually means; later I discovered as part of my research that it's short for 'Newbie'. We had just written and produced the whole album for the first time together with our producers, which was a totally new experience. In this context, I found the term NOOB pretty exciting and reinterpreted it for us."
So Steffen, who had been DE/VISION's sole songwriter since Markus' departure, has been able to share some of the responsibility, which on the one hand liberated the compositional process and made it more complicated on the other. The pleasing result of this new working method is an album that sparkles with lightly shimmering pop gems. Songs such as "Death Of Me", "What You Deserve", "Living Fast Dying Young", the promo single "Flavour Of The Week" or the new version of "Love Will Find A Way" flow through the aural tract with invigorating lightness, DE/VISION immersing themselves in melancholy dream worlds with "See What I See", and above all this hovers a nostalgic retro feeling that brings to mind the band's musical roots. Inspired by the cool remixes that Rotoskop contributed to the "Best Of …" release, "NOOB" sees DE/VISION embark to some extent on a journey back to the eighties, a time of busy experimentation in the resurrected electro scene, merging pop, rock, funk, reggae, ambient etc. elements. The unostentatious artwork featuring the NOOB neon logo can definitely be considered a reminiscence of that pioneering era of electronic pop music, yet at the same time DE/VISION have once again succeeded on "NOOB" in insistently getting to the heart of a number of brilliant tracks in a pleasantly reduced style with modern as well as classical quotations.
DE/VISION muss dem geneigten Pop-Konsumenten sicher nicht mehr vorgestellt werden. Schließlich gehört das Electro-Duo seit nunmehr fast zwanzig Jahren zu den führenden Vertretern seines Genres und hat es in all der angehäuften Zeit immer wieder souverän verstanden, sich selbst neu zu erfinden, Grenzen des Machbaren auszuloten und dabei eben auch den oft inflationär gebrauchten „Crossover“-Begriff mit spannenden Inhalten zu füllen. Dass während dieser oft mutigen Experimentierphasen auch ein zuvor etabliertes Bandgefüge auseinanderfallen kann, gehört dann eben leider auch zu den Unwägbarkeiten in einer bewegten Biografie.
Diese Zäsur fand bei DE/VISION zur Jahrtausendwende statt, nachdem man als Trio jahrelang erfolgreichen, extrem gefälligen Synthi-Pop produziert hatte, mit dem man die Aufmerksamkeit des Majors WEA auf sich zog. Dort sind mit „Monosex“ und „Void“ Ende der Neunziger zwei Alben erschienen, die das Klangspektrum der Band extrem weit öffneten. Auf einmal waren für puristische Electro-Heads oft verpönte Gitarren kein Tabu mehr, und auch auf dem weiten Feld der elektronischen Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten wurde sehr freigiebig experimentiert. Diese Frischzellenkur geriet allerdings zu einer Gratwanderung, die Gründungsmitglied Markus nicht mehr mittragen wollte, worauf er die Band verließ, während Thomas und Steffen nicht nur zum „großen“ Indie Drakkar wechselten, sondern sich mit dem 2001 erschienenen Album „Two“ auch wieder ihrer alten Tugenden besannen.
Mittlerweile haben DE/VISION längst wieder ihren Kurs gefunden, ohne dabei ihren Sinn für neue Sounds und Experimente aus den Augen und Ohren verloren zu haben. Die ständige Öffnung für neue Einflüsse und Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten ist fraglos eine der fundamentalen Konstanten im Erfolgskonzept der Band, die mit den weiteren Alben „Devolution“ (2003), „6 feet underground“ (2004) und „Subkutan“ (2005) eine Vielzahl von begnadeten Pop-Hymnen produzierte, die sich dann größtenteils auf der im vergangenen Jahr erschienenen „Best Of …“ wiederfinden durften. Dort war mit dem exklusiven, extra für die Compilation eingespielten „Love Will Find A Way“ auch die erste echte Kompositionsgemeinschaftsarbeit von Thomas und Steffen mit ihrem geschätzten Produzenten-Team Schumann & Bach zu finden, was so gut funktioniert hat, dass man das neue Album mit dem interessanten Titel „NOOB“ gleich komplett in der bewährten Viererrunde eingespielt hat. Daher auch der Titel, der dem Computerspieler-Jargon entliehen ist und dort einen Neuling bezeichnet oder auch abfällig einen erfahrenen Spieler, der Anfängerfehler macht.
„Wir suchen immer nach Worten, die die Leute auch interessant finden könnten, auf der anderen Seite aber auch für uns verwendbar sind“, klärt Frontmann Steffen auf. „NOOB ist auf meinem Mist gewachsen, weil ich viel im Internet unterwegs bin und auch mal Rollenspiele zocke. Ich fand den Begriff erst mal vom Klang her interessant, ohne zu wissen, was das eigentlich bedeutet, und habe bei den Recherchen herausgefunden, dass es eine Abkürzung für ‚Newbie’ ist. Nun haben wir das neue Album zum ersten Mal komplett mit unseren Produzenten geschrieben und produziert, was für uns eine ganz neue Erfahrung war. In diesem Zusammenhang fand ich den Begriff NOOB auch ganz spannend und habe ihn für uns umgedeutet.“
Somit hat Steffen, der seit dem Ausstieg von Markus alleiniger Songwriter bei DE/VISION gewesen ist, etwas Last von seinen Schultern genommen bekommen, was auf der einen Seite den Kompositionsprozess freier, die Entscheidungsfindung letztlich aber auch komplizierter gestaltete. Erfreuliches Resultat der neuen Arbeitsweise ist aber jedenfalls ein Album, das vor leicht-flirrenden Pop-Perlen nur so wimmelt. Mit belebender Leichtigkeit fließen Songs wie „Death Of Me“, „What You Deserve“, „Living Fast Dying Young“, die Promo-Single „Flavour Of The Week“ oder der neuen Version von „Love Will Find A Way“ durch die Gehörgänge, tauchen DE/VISION mit „See What I See“ in melancholischen Traumgefilden, und über allem schwebt ein nostalgisches Retro-Feeling, das vor allem die musikalischen Wurzeln der Band erinnert. Angeregt auch von den coolen Remixen, die Rotoskop zum Release der „Best Of …“ beigesteuert haben, unternehmen DE/VISION mit „NOOB“ ein Stück weit eine Zeitreise zurück in die 80s, als gerade auch in der auflebenden Electro-Szene fleißig experimentiert worden ist und Elemente aus Pop, Rock, Funk, Reggae, Ambient etc. miteinander verwoben wurden. Das schlichte Artwork mit dem Neon-Schriftzug NOOB darf also unbekümmert als Reminiszenz an diese Pionierzeit der elektronischen Popmusik verstanden werden, aber darüber hinaus verstehen es DE/VISION mit „NOOB“ einfach mal wieder, brillante Songs auf angenehm reduzierte Weise mit modernen wie klassischen Zutaten extrem eindringlich auf den Punkt zu bringen.

I guess it's just another way of saying look ahead and don't look back, but I thought how true it is that it doesn't matter what we have been through, our self-perceived flaws or our so-called failures. We can't do anything about the past but learn from it and move on, hopefully using it as a tool to better discover our greater purpose.
