Cityfest, Fourth Street Fair, Dally in the Alley … and now, Ferndale’s own, DIY Street Fair. Amplify the vigor of artistic energy in a centralized location (Detroit) and a spillover into outlying cities forming satellites of equal activity (Ferndale) is inevitable. Thus, Chris Johnston, co-manager/owner of the Woodward Avenue Brewery and The Emory has assembled a board of volunteers and mobilized his connections through Ferndale’s DDA to envision the DIY Street Fair, a festival of art and music on September 20 and 21 (coinciding with Ferndale’s other Nine-Mile-based Art Fair) based on Troy Street and spilling over into the WAB’s parking lot with 50+ booths for artists with a “Do-It-Yourself” aesthetic/approach to creation. “I really love this city,” said Johnston, who was inspired to boost local businesses and felt “there was something missing [in Ferndale], like an event that was really about the people.” Combine that with the band-booking aid of Carey Gustafson, who’s already lined up The Nice Device, Charlie Slick, The High Strung, Silverghost, The Pop Project and The Muggs.
