Even though some of my favorite DJs are superstars, most of my influences comes from the local DJs, DJs like: DJ MEL, CHICKEN GEOERGE, DJ TATS, NICKNACK, DONNIE DEE, and of course S.A.'s very own DJ RISE JJ LOPEZ and of course DJ JESTER. R.I.P. DJ DUSK I had the honor of hearing him at the ROOTDOWN in LA before his untimely death, and it was one of the best times I had in my life both listening to a DJ and truly enjoying what he played and how he played it, thank you....
I am a DJ at heart with a profound passion for DJing and its culture. I started playing around 96', but I've been collecting since 1990. In my career as a DJ i've played and continue to play soulful music. What is soulful music? Well I can't really tell you, you just feel it, and it feels good to your mind body and soul. I truly love soul, or R&B especially the "New Jack Swing sound" of the 1990s, "true based" Hip-Hop and of course Jazz, and I can never get enough of Jimmy Smith. My collection ranges from Jazz to Classic Rock to Disco to New Wave to R&B to Hip Hop from 45s to Lps (never CDs)and so on and so on, in other words the crates run deep, really deep, I mean we all have our guilty pleasures. Because I love music so much and its also my business, nothing and I mean NOTHING saddens me more than what is being played and passed off as Hip Hop and what it stands for. So there's no confussion HIP HOP IS NOT ON THE RADIO! Wake up America, and I say America because if there is anything we can be proud about, we can be proud to say that HIP HOP is as American as Apple Pie! Yet, with that said I think its kind of ironic that the state of todays mainstream music parallels the state of our country (not in good shape at all!). Hip Hop started here and its roots are here. We should demand better from our media outlets. I try to play every set as if its my last, yet sometimes I find that hard to do with the request that I get every night. I swear the next time someone ask me "Are you going to play any Hip Hop tonight?" while I'm playing J5 or De La Soul is going to get my drink poured on them...Well not really just be aware that there is a right way and a wrong way to talk to a DJ. I guess in the end all that I really want to do is just play GOOD music, make people dance, and educate music through vinyl culture...Is that so hard??? Believe it or not...it is...
