A number of students got a sneak peak at DJ Grouch's Scratchlab Institute March 14 as part of the March Break activities at the Albion branch of the Toronto Public Library."(These programs) make the library a fun place to be, not just pick up books; you could DJ for an afternoon," said Youth Outreach Service Specialist, Hanney Mussa. "We listen to our youth and try to do something for them."
Mussa helped organize the events that took place over the March Break, which included Grouch's DJ workshop and a video game tournament.
"We were going to go to the library to do work, but it's due the next, next week," says 10-year-old Abdiraham Noor, of his homework assigments at Elm Bank Junior Middle Academy.
Noor was one of the many students that got a chance to go up and practice a "cue-scratch" on the DJ table.
When any of the students went up to try out the DJ table they got a chance to pick between fast and slow songs, and even request a song to play along to.
"It's my first time doing it, but it was fun." Noor says.
But because there were so many students DJ Grouch could only teach the "cue-scratch" so he quickly taught the students how to mix between songs, pick a track on his computer and learn some components of his turn-tables.
Talking about his experience, the 34-year-old DJ Grouch said, "I'm self-taught, I learned how to scratch myself and then started doing house parties and high school dances."
"I was teaching at community centres, one-on-ones, this is more of a classroom. You can have 12 students at one time," he said.
This was the third time DJ Grouch hosted a workshop this March Break at branches of the Toronto Public Library. For more information on Scratchlab DJ Institute you can visit www.scratchlab.ca or call 416-638-7137.
