I like a lot of hip hop too.
Every musician that is serious about their artform has learned a great deal from other musicians. The idea is not to steal other styles, but to learn from them and incorporate them into a new style. Thats where hip hop came from, all the funk, calaypso, jazz, rock, all that stuff combined. That's what DJ'ing is too (if you're doing it right), but on a different level, instead of creating beats and looping up samples and chopping up drums and stuff, you're taking parts of different songs or even whole songs, from different time periods, different mindstates, diverse backgrounds, and you're combining them and making them flow together to create a cohesive, singular piece of work that has a direction that flows through it. Its all about the flow, and tons of cats out there are lacking that right now. But they all influence me to chase after that flow and that beautiful feeling that only great music can bring, and even if they clog up the marketplace with garbage, ill music can always be found, so its all love, even though I'll smoke em in a battle.
I'm DJ Inform. I currently live in Columbus, Ohio, where I DJ frequently on my own or in one of several groups I am affiliated with. These groups include The Green Brothers (i am also known as DJ Bern One), Chicken Hawk Bird Getters, Ol' Scandalous, or Street Gumbo (based in New Orleans, LA). I scratch a lot, and try to do it tastefully.
i wrote this thing underneath in the third person because i thought it would make me sound cool. Its possible it did, i'm not sure though.
DJ Inform. A name that has consistently been coming up as one of the best up and coming DJ's in the midwest. Starting out in Ohio in the late 1990's with the turntables, Inform was no stranger to music. Being the first son of professional classical musicians (his mother plays violin and his father conducts and runs his own orchestra), he was trained on the piano from an early age. Although Inform was not a huge fan of classical music, he won several prestigious competitions, and was a talented pianist. Soon after winning the last competition he entered, he quit the piano, and started to focus all of his energy on figuring out the turntables.
Since then, he has held weekly residencies at hotspots on both sides of the country, in Seattle (at the Triangle, The Jai Thai) and in Columbus, OH(Bento Go Go, Skullys), completed two tours as the DJ providing scratches and controlling the beats for all of the performers, done spot dates all over ohio, Washington, Oregon, California, and New York, DJ'ed weekly on the Los Angeles Radio station KUSC, held down the cuts for many groups, bands, MC's, rappers, singers, battled in prestigious DJ competitions (DMC's two years, Guitar Center Spinoff one year), and managed to release a couple of mixtapes showcasing his signature funky cut and paste style of recording mixs.
In the increasingly segmented DJ scene, Inform is kind of an anomaly. While most DJ's are content to use some kind of digital mixing program on their computer and drop songs one after the next, Inform's unique styles of mixing and scratching set him apart. With much technical skill and a large arsenal of funk and hip hop party bombs (all on original vinyl, as they should be), Inform always gets the respect of the old school, with the excitement of the new school. Check him out, you won't be disappointed.
