teacher of Philosophy & Religion and Sound designer/artist. however, the teaching has now been halved somewhat as i become a student once more and study for an MA in Philosophy, Existentialism, Quranic Hermeneutics and Arabic Metaphysics.
i am from London, though at times choose to reside in Damascus;Syria, and Samarkand;Uzbekistan. London is home however.
much of what you may experience on this page as composition, are a direct result of sound design and acoustic sculptures. also of note is a slight concern that when teaching a discipline as abstract as Philosophy, (as a result of our 'modern' sociological trend of affirmation via largely the phenomena of appearance) many seem capable of understanding philosophical analogies via methods of visual stimuli only.
with this in mind my intention was/is to create acoustic resources within a pedagogical framework in order to assist with the lecturing of Philosophy&Religion. so far the results have been interesting.
alongside the lecturing/teaching, i am also (to loosely endorse the term) a Sound Artist. i have recently been creating unorthodox acoustic works for museums, art installations, television advertisements and educational resource agencies. i may sometimes be found as the sound artist at a gallery or two.
in many of my compositions there is what i refer to as, the sound of the machine on the outside. this initially arose out of using a very basic government computer from pakistan to generate acoustics, but then as i began to incorporate the sound of the machine as textures, i accepted it as part of the composition. i would also say in places i use it as an additional sample. with the assistance of my father i have reconfigured some old seventies' video tape recorders so that they now emit sound waves, and thus can be monitored and recorded, rather like an oscilloscope with acoustic textures, but generally responding to the unwitting frequencies generated by the components rather than the supposed default emission. some of my compositions are programmed in Algol(an algorithm based programming language). anyhow, i am trying to manage the newly formed educational acoustic resource project the Treesymmetry Organisation. this involves providing acoustic sculptures and sound designs for Educational Agencies and Schools to be used as direct learning resources across the National Curriculum. as a teacher and lecturer myself, the project is a tried and tested method. forthcoming projects include sound resources for History, Physics and Classics.
as 'vizier of damascus' it is rare for me to perform live as i record on tape and tend to prefer my acorn bbc b master and commodore amiga. because i am a layman these are not the easiest to negotiate out of one's studio setup. i am a pianist and also play the kamanche.i have recently returned to playing arabic string instruments and the yemeni duff drum. these are very simple in structure, with much of the instrument originating from untreated wood.
i would love to study the dendrochronology of Socotran trees (as featured). i spend two hours a week at a local private nursery . . . i also tell stories.
i am at present working on a commission for the Geneva Museum of Contemporary Art.
thank you for reading how i use 'i' for almost every sentence.
