Sulek is a band. We like to make music, and we like to make it ourselves, spontaneously, and never the same way twice. Sulek began with David Kelly on piano and banjo, Russ McGowan on bass, Chris Winberg on drums, and Patrick Hoctor on guitar, vocals, and cello. The band doesn’t quite look like that anymore, but we’ll get to that later. We started playing music in basements, bedrooms, and garages in 2005, and finally got to thinking that it would be fun to make some recordings. So, like any high-schooler would do, Chris asked for a multi-track recorder for Christmas, and, thanks to Santa, he got it. With this 4-track recorder, we recorded a bunch of random songs over a few years. We had fun doing it and were happy with the results we were getting, but then we all left for college, and the future of Sulek was left uncertain. This is where fate took a hand in the future of Sulek. Patrick’s roommate in college turned out to be an animator who needed music for his animations. Perfect. The animator’s name was Grey Gerling and his animations, under the name of BarfQuesiton Films, were speedily growing in popularity, and soon enough people wanted to know who was behind the music for these homemade animations. And thus, we pieced together some of the 4-track recordings that we had made in high school and that were making appearances in Grey’s animations and in 2008 our first album “Songs From The Doctor’s Office” was born into the world. Being comprised of recordings made over three years, “Doctor’s Office” is all over the place. If you like an album that is so eclectic that it leaves you wondering, “Am I still listening to Sulek?” then this album is for you. The number of sales of this album and the success of the song “Swamp Song” gave us confidence in what we were doing and we soon started recording more music. We got together with our little 4-track over winter breaks and summer breaks and eventually, without really realizing it, we had another album finished, and in 2009 we released our second album, “Believer’s Lane.” While the first album was more of a full band effort, “Believer’s Lane” was mainly written and recorded by Patrick and David. This was mostly due to Russ being in Ohio while we recorded the album in Milwaukee, and Chris being on his fast (and extremely busy) track to achieving his doctorate in physical therapy. For this album we focused on recreating more of what we liked most from the first album, ending up with an album that was still all over the place like “Doctor’s Office” but with a similar feel throughout the entire album. This is where things got hairy. Right smack in the middle of writing our third album and playing our first stunt of real shows, David and Russ decided that it was time to leave the country, and Sulek, behind. With David leaving for Korea and Russ for China, the end of Sulek seemed to have finally come, but only a few days after what was thought to be the last Sulek show ever, Chris, Ruthie (Patrick’s wife who had at the time made a few guest appearances on the first two albums), and Patrick decided that Sulek did not need to end and began writing the next album. The new songs were again coming about in a much different way than they did in the previous album; Chris and Ruthie were writing all the lyrics, and Patrick was writing and recording all of the music. This presented a possible problem: if Patrick was writing all of the music, the album might lose the eclectic feel that is very present in “Doctor’s Office” and “Believer’s Lane.” To solve this problem Patrick challenged himself to write songs on banjo, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, drums, and cello. The end result was our third studio album, “Birds in the Attic,” released in 2011 and recorded using an 8-track analog recorder with the help of producer Justin Heron. That’s it so far. Plans are to record another album with the help of Justin in the summer of 2011. Chris will never stop filling Patrick’s inbox with lyrics. But you never know with us. -Sulek
