Dj Doo Wop was born in the Los Angeles, Ca, USA. He is of Puerto Rican/Cuban-American descent.
Even though Wop was born on the West Coast, he was brought to New York at the age of 2 & lived there ever since.
Doo Wop has paid more than enough his share of dues. He went from making pause tapes with one turntable, to DJ'ing house parties, community events & proms,
to performing & spinning in front of thousands at many of the major clubs/venues in New York, New Jersey, Atlanta, Miami, Vegas, Japan, Germany, England &
many more international venues.
His mixtapes began to echo throughout the tri-state(NY, NJ, Conn.) in the early 90's. His catchy & colorful intros soon became the signature seal of Doo Wop's
musical mixtape experience. Wop himself eventually began to showcase his own freestyle abilities & producing tracks with already well known artists who would
collaborate with Wop just to be a part of mixtape history. Not one artist from Busta Rhymes to Fat Joe to Mobb Deep ever charged Doo Wop a dime.
His tapes soon caught the attention of major record company executives & eventually landed 2 major record deals(Virgin-1994 & Universal-1998). Sadly, Wop
never released an album on either label. In an interview he once stated that "the Virgin situation fell apart due to a West Coast based label trying to steer me
away from the thing that made me which is the streets. They heard of me thru my street mixtapes but still wanted me to stop making tapes & record my whole
album in California. I didnt think that was a good idea & quickly demanded a release." In 1998, Wop signed as an artist to Universal Records. He recorded
10-12 songs with artists such as Mr. Cheeks, Busta Rhymes, AZ, MOP, Kool G Rap, Nore. What made these songs different from the average "DJ song"
was that Wop would rhyme alongside these artists. But once again, the label had another vision for what Doo Wop's album should be & the conflict began.
Long story short, after over a year of back & forth via lawyers, a&r's & record execs, Wop was released from the label but granted all his music & also was
given a slightly generous monetary parting gift upon his release.
Everyone agrees that Doo Wop gave birth to the formats Mixtape DJ's use nowadays, i.e. skits at the beginning of their tape, collaberationswith fellow dj's,
catchy titles to co-inside with the concept of a particular tape as well as the one thing used by most mixtape makers today, freestyles by well known artists.
