One thing is for sure; DORIS is a band with 2 guitars, a bass, drums, and 2 vocalists who are also the guitarists. So if my math is correct, that would be four members. If you thought the answer was six, check your math again. Don’t worry, this isn’t for a grade. Anyway…wait, wait, wait - All of that was completely false! DORIS no longer has four members because, for some reason, bass players seem to keep disappearing. Apparently the fourth member of DORIS suffers some sort of Twilight Zone/Bermuda Triangle/Spinal Tap type demise. Why keep tempting fate?
Now that we have that mess straightened out, DORIS isn’t just three musical instruments and a couple pair of vocal chords; DORIS is made up of people! Musical instruments can’t play themselves, silly! Rick plays the guitar and sings, Mike plays the bass and sings, and Andy beats on the drums. As complex as that may sound, it only gets worse. These three play everything at the same time, in a synchronized fashion! And that, my friend, takes talent.
DORIS plays electrified rock music. You could also say there is a punk sound to the music, so punk/rock might be appropriate. Punk/rock implies that the music is either punk or rock, but it also might be punk rock, which is an entirely different thing altogether. So, you could describe DORIS as punk/rock, punk rock…but you cannot discount the possibility that the music is rock rock because DORIS rocks way too much…so that would make it punk/rock, punk rock, rock rock. There, that sounds good. Wait, I almost forgot - indie music is the in-thing right now. However indefinable the term indie is, DORIS definitely is indie. So that would make DORIS a punk/rock, punk rock, rock rock, indie band. That sounds smart! Oh snap! I can’t leave out the fact that DORIS, while definitely indie, is also indie rock. I wouldn’t want to mislead anyone. Finally, here is the official classification of the DORIS sound: punk/rock, punk rock, rock rock, indie, indie rock. Now that is a sound! Oops, I did it again! I forgot that DORIS songs are tight and catchy also, so that would make them pop. Ok, the new description is punk/rock, punk rock, rock rock, indie, indie rock, pop. Ooo, tasty!
Now that DORIS has been properly described and classified, they need a purpose. From what I’ve heard, their motives are not sinister in any way; no world domination is desired. I gather that they would be happy writing good songs, performing those songs for a bunch of people who like said songs, maybe even selling digital representations of those much-talked-about songs to the people who like the songs. I understand that this process would repeat, and repeat enough that the boys in DORIS would no longer have to work at their other jobs. Earn enough money to pay the bills, I suspect. Wow, DORIS really sounds like a neat bunch!
Having played a whole lot of venues in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, DORIS is well on its way. A bunch of those places have since closed down, so I am not sure if that speaks to the sustainability of the local music scene, or the fact that the DORIS brand of punk/rock, punk rock, rock rock, indie, indie rock, pop was too much for those fine establishments to handle, and they simply had to close their doors. Nonetheless, DORIS has (or had) been known to frequent Trees, The Curtain Club, The Liquid Lounge, Club Clearview, The Galaxy Club, The What?Bar, The Texas Tea House, and Club Indigo, just to name a few Dallas venues. DORIS has also made it out to Ft. Worth to play the Aardvark and to Denton to play Andy’s Basement Bar and Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios. They also went all the way out to Chicago twice to play in the 2006 Bodog Battle of the Bands after winning the first round of the competition.
In conclusion, DORIS makes music. People like music. People like DORIS. People like the music that DORIS makes. I think that sums it up nicely.
