Too many things. My kids top the list. Nature, music, reading, writing, martial arts, Notre Dame football, fishing, running in the woods, hanging with friends, making dreams come true, walking in balance, making new friends, stargazing; Finishing up the transition from the first part of my life to the second….unlearning so much nonsense and craziness that is part of the socialization process and all things that cloud my vision and interfere with ‘waking up’. Getting rid of clutter, simplification. Doing my part to help leave the world a better place for my children. Regaining a sense of wonder, mystery, awe, lightness that I had as a child…spreading it around.

  • Music

Music has been a constant companion throughout my life. It’s pretty clear to me that music is a universal language. Music can’t lie. It can be very healing or unhealthy. Music is one of the most powerful forces in the universe. Some musicians and physicists actually believe the Uni-verse IS music. Sounds like a bit much but it works for me. When you ask good musicians ‘where does the music come fom’, it’s very common to hear this response: “ Dunno really, it comes through me….it’s all around….in the air…” I listen to the sounds of space recorded by NASA as Voyagers I and II left out solar system; fascinating and relaxing stuff. I enjoy those ‘environment’ cd’s. I am into songbirds, the wind, the ocean, the woods…all natural sounds that can sound like a Symphony to me. I listen to all kinds of music. I go in cycles. Sometimes, I am just listening to classical. I really dig solo instrumental classical stuff. I love ‘World’ music especially the sounds of indigenous peoples instruments, chants, etc. I like listening to those ‘best of’s from different decades. I like bluegrass, Irish bands, Chet Atkins. I like Louis Armstrong and Ray Charles. I was raised on music played by Philadelphia dj’s on FM stations in the 60’s and 70’s. I realy like Pat Metheny, Lyle Mays, Keith Jarrett, the Neville brothers, Ravi Shankar. These guys played everything. They turned us on to all albums and artists. This was when dj’s played what they wanted, when they wanted. They could play album sides of new Todd or Billy Joel or YES, or Stevie Wonder, Van Morrison, Dylan, and so on. My first concert was 6.12.1976 at JFK stadium in Philly…that started at noon and ended around 1 am…..Mummer’s, Pousette Dart Band, Gary Wright, Peter Frampton, and YES….. My kids turn me on to new stuff. I will need to add to this since I realize many of my favorites haven’t been mentioned.
  • Movies

Martial Arts: Many visitors have posed questions about my martial arts background. Please read this post to learn more about my martial training and experience...
  • Television

I move in cycles re tv. I went more than a year watching no tv. Didn’t miss it. As I get exposed to it, it felt like really nasty energy. I believe tv is the most dangerous drug on the planet, does more harm than al the others combined. That said, I let my son turn me on to whatever is worth checking out.</p
  • Books

I started reading like a wild animal early in life. I read all the ‘Great Books”, and stuff like ‘Old Yeller’, ‘The Raft’, bios of different Presidents, and putative heroes. I went through lots of philosophy-esp phenomenology, theology, social science during college. Overdosed on psychology and psychiatry in graduate school. Tend to read non-fiction more than fiction but I love Walker Percy. Been reading James Webb, Tom Clancy, etc. I am into cosmology, the ‘life sciences’, history (Arnold Toynbee), Native American stuff, physics, and so on. I avoid self-help and most psychology like the plague. I pay attention to martial arts classics and keep an eye open for cool new stuff. I’ll get around to ‘favorites’ another day.

  • Heroes

Mostly everyday people…..mothers and fathers who take seriously their responsibilities, people who hold the line, risk their lives for other people without even the possibility of being recognized, people who speak out re injustice no matter he consequences. I believe the word ‘hero’ has been bastardized.

Kevin L. Keough, Psy.D, is 48 years old. He has two teenage children; his daughter is 20 and his son is 17. They live in Wilmington, Delaware. Dr. Keough was born and raised in Delaware. He is the oldest of 6 children reared in an Irish Catholic family that traces roots to County Kerry in Ireland.

Dr. Keough earned a B.A. Degree with Distinction, with a major in psychology and minor in philosophy, from the University of DelawareHe earned a Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) in clinical psychology from Baylor University. He served an internship in clinical psychology at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst Mental Health Division. He completed his first year of post-doctoral supervision toward licensure as a staff psychologist at Western State Hospital; with an appointment to the University of Virginia Medical School, Department of Psychiatry, as an associate professor in psychology. Dr. Keough completed a second year of supervised work as staff psychologist in a juvenile prison in Delaware with the Division of Youth Rehabilitative Services.

Dr. Keough entered private practice in 3.1992. He established the Marriage and Family Center of Delaware in 6.1993. He offered a broad range of services including psychological testing, initial assessments, individual, couples, and family therapy. He worked with adolescents and adults from diverse backgrounds with a broad range of presenting problems. Dr. Keough developed close working relationships with family physicians and psychiatrists to coordinate patient care. For 8 years he worked in partnership with a psychiatrist.

Dr. Keough served as a consultant to schools, businesses, and various community organizations. He taught an Advanced Placement Honors Psychology course for several years at a local high school. Keough worked extensively with the DuPont Company employees during a protracted and difficult period of downsizing and outsourcing.

Keough traveled to the University of Denver to obtain training in the PREP approach to couples counseling developed by Dr. Howard Markman and Dr. Scott Stanley (www.prepinc.com ) He alerted the public to the unique benefits of this model in numerous public forums. He was invited twice to give presentations at the State of Delaware’s Division of Prevention annual convention.

Dr. Keough served as Chairman of the Delaware Psychological Association’s Political Action Committee from 1994-1996. He met with federal, state, and local politicians to advocate for parity in insurance coverage for mental health services. Additionally, he consulted with local businesses in successful efforts to educate decision makers about the benefits and cost effectiveness of providing employees insurance coverage for mental health services. Dr. Keough was active in the Delaware Psychological Association’s Continuing Education Committee; he was instrumental in bringing nationally recognized psychologists to Delaware for workshops and seminars.

Dr. Keough established the Police Psychology Consultation Center and related web site in 1996. The mission of the Police Psychology Consultation Center, founded in 1995, was to ensure that police officers and their families had access to comprehensive, competent, and integrated mental health and family wellnes services/resources/information.

PPCC offered a broad range of primary prevention, secondary educational ,and tertiary interventions designed to effectively respond to the unique mental health needs of the law enforcement community. He was a member of the Special Psychological Services Group, the nation's largest and most respected network of police psychologists. Dr. Keough functioned as a political advocate for individual police officers and law enforcement organizations. The PPCC was committed to supporting the health and well-being of individual officers in a way commensurate with the magnitude and insidious nature of the day to day stressors experienced by police officers. He participated in approximately 60 'active' ridealongs to be exposed to the rigors of different aspects of patrol duty. Dr. Keough worked with the New Orleans police department for a weeks, days after Hurricane Katrina hit.

Dr. Keough gradually shifted the emphasis of his professional work from direct delivery of mental health services to alternative ways to address mental health needs in 1.2007. This followed five years of intensive personal and professional investigation and use of light therapy and negative ion generators as treatment methods Visit the Light Therapy Company website.

Dr. Keough launched the North Star Guardians Podcast. in 3.2007 with the assistance of Deborah Harper, owner and president of Psychjourney who had already initiated a series of audio interviews with prominent authors in psychology and related fields. Dr. Keough intends to continue doing audio interviews for many years with influential authors whose work offers inspiration and practical guidance to the general public.

He launched Warrior Traditions Podcast in August 2007.

Dr. Keough plans to focus a majority of his professional time to writing, consultation, workshops, implementing prevention programs, and collaborative work with other professionals. Currently, he is writing a book with the working title of "Music, Meditation, and the Martial Arts of Everyday Life” inspired by his mentor, R.D. Laing.

Who I'd like to meet:

Like to meet: I am most interested in unpretentious down to earth people who aren’t afraid to be themselves. Humility is very important to me, so I look for it in other people. I am fascinated by people of all ages, diverse backgrounds, different cultures, and so on. I tend to prefer people who leave the beaten path. I have tremendous respect for people who have struggled a great deal and/or are engaged in a struggle. I like people who prefer to operate under the radar but really admire folks who call attention to injustice. I pay attention to everyone that crosses my path. I work hard to learn something from everybody even if it’s ‘just’ patience and controlling urges to break bones. I’m interested in ‘quid pro quo’ business and networking relationships. I like people who have spent too much time having to tell predators..”No”…. ..
