“You’ll get freedom by letting your enemy know that you’ll do anything to get your freedom; then you’ll get it…when you stay radical long enough and get enough people to be like you, you’ll get your freedom.” Malcolm X
Igniting A Revolution: Voices in Defense of the Earth Steven Best & Anthony J. Nocella, II
Global warming, acid rain, deforestation, air and water pollution are but a few of the overwhelming indicators that the earth's health is worsening. For decades, environmental groups have been resisting the destructive trends set by industry and government, but as the social and political climate has changed, popular protest movements have become less and less effective. As the earth's situation worsens, those opposing its destruction have out of necessity become increasingly militant. Corporate and federal properties have been vandalized, set ablaze-even bombed-and the government is meeting this new brand of environmental militance with an increasingly heavy hand.
Whether you're drawn by frustration with environmental strategies that, to date, have been ineffective against this growing ecological crisis, or simply by curiosity (Who are these people? Why are they doing this? What do they hope to gain?), Igniting a Revolution offers a fascinating and compelling look at the emerging movement of revolutionary environmentalism. Includes essays by Marilyn Buck, Robert Jensen, John Zerzan, Ashanti Alston, Jeffrey "Free" Luers, Derrick Jensen, Ann Hansen, and a preface by Bron Taylor.

Terrorists or Freedom Fighters? Reflections on the Liberation of Animals
Steven Best & Anthony J. Nocella, II
The first anthology of writings on the history, ethics, politics and tactics of the Animal Liberation Front, Terrorists or Freedom Fighters? features both academic and activist perspectives and offers powerful insights into this international organization and its position within the animal rights movement. Calling on sources as venerable as Thomas Aquinas and as current as the Patriot Act—and, in some cases, personal experience—the contributors explore the history of civil disobedience and sabotage, and examine the philosophical and cultural meanings of words like “terrorism,” “democracy” and “freedom,” in a book that ultimately challenges the values and assumptions that pervade our culture. Contributors include Robin Webb, Rod Coronado, Ingrid Newkirk, Paul Watson, Karen Davis, Bruce Friedrich and others.

The Postmodern Turn
Steven Best and Douglas Kellner
This book presents a groundbreaking analysis of the emergence of a postmodern paradigm in theory, the arts, science, and politics. From the authors of Postmodern Theory, the much-acclaimed introduction to key postmodern thinkers and themes, The Postmodern Turn ranges over diverse intellectual and artistic terrain--from architecture, painting, literature, music, and politics, to the physical and biological sciences. Critically engaging postmodern theory and culture, Steven Best and Douglas Kellner illuminate our momentous transition between a modernist past and a future struggling to define itself.

The Postmodern Adventure: Science, Technology, and Cultural Studies at the Third Millennium
Steven Best and Douglas Kellner
Massive geopolitical shifts and dramatic developments in computerization and biotechnology are heralding the transformation from the modern to the postmodern age. We are confronted with altered modes of work, communication, and entertainment; new postindustrial and political networks; novel approaches to warfare; genetic engineering; and even cloning. This compelling book explores the challenges to theory, politics, and human identity that we face on the threshold of the third millennium. It follows on the success of Best and Kellner's two previous books, Postmodern Theory--acclaimed as the best critical introduction to the field--and The Postmodern Turn, which provides a powerful mapping of postmodern developments in the arts, politics, science, and theory. In The Postmodern Adventure, Best and Kellner analyze a broad array of literary, cultural, and political phenomena from fiction, film, science, and the Internet, to globalization and the rise of a transnational image culture. They use the best of modern and postmodern perspectives to illuminate contemporary life and to strive for a just and viable future.

The Politics of Historical Vision: Marx, Foucault, Habermas
Steven Best
Providing an important contribution to current controversies regarding history, social theory,
politics, and the Foucault Habermas debates, this work offers a detailed comparison of the historical visions of both Foucault and Habermas, using Marx as a modernist contrast. The book clearly illustrates the advantages and disadvantages of each thinker's theory for the productive analysis of history and society, relating the work of each to current debates over modern and postmodern theory.

Postmodern Theory: Critical Interrogations
Steven Best and Douglas Kellner
In this timely volume, the authors systematically analyze postmodern theory to evaluate its relevance for critical social theory and radical politics today.
Best and Kellner provide:
* An introduction and critique of the work of Foucault, Deleuze and Guattari, Baudrillard, Lyotard, Laclau and Mouffe, and Jameson, which assess the varying contributions and limitations of postmodern theory
* A discussion of postmodern feminist theory and the politics of identity
* A systematic study of the origin of the discourse of the postmodern in historical, sociological, cultural, and philosophical studies.
The authors claim that while postmodern theory provides insights into contemporary developments, it lacks adequate methodological and political perspectives to provide a critical social theory and radical politics for the present age.
About me: Award-winning writer, noted speaker, and scholar-activist, Steven Best engages in array of social theoretical and philosophical topics such as environmental ethics, critical media studies, cultural studies, critical theory, science and technology studies, critical animal studies, critical race theory, ecopedagogy, critical pedagogy, globalization, social movements, gender studies, and peace and conflict studies. Best has published 10 books, over 100 articles and reviews, spoken in over a dozen countries, interviewed with media throughout the world, appeared in numerous documentaries, and was voted by VegNews as one of the nations “25 Most Fascinating Vegetarians.” From the US to Norway, from Sweden to France, from Germany to South Africa, and Russia to Romania, Best shows what philosophy means in a world in crisis.

I have received official notification from the Florida legislature that
the low cost spay/neuter bill will be refiled for March 2010. How it
works-What it does is provide funding for low cost/free spay/neutering
for people who voluntarily bring in their pets to be spay/neutered-for
every animal cruelty or animal ordinance violation there shall be a
surcharge to fund low cost/free spay/neutering programs making this
option available to ALL Floridians. I guarantee if you offer dirt
cheap, even free spay/neutering people will bring in their pets by the
truck load which means LESS strays and LESS homeless animals and LESS
animals to kill in pounds. The bill was never rejected by the Florida
legislature in 2009, but the only thing they passed was a budget. This
spay/neuter bill was co-sponsored by the entire Agriculture committee
so there is a very good chance of it passing next term :-) This is all
very exciting news. I am working on a few other animal bills, but this
spay/neuter bill is top priority. I called vets and found out they
charge about $250 to $300 per SPAY per cat. No wonder there are too
many homeless animals around. This is utterly ridiculous!!!
How did you locate me on here? Glad you did. Looks like we were already friends. Great meeting you and your work is appreciated as well. Boarding my flight to Spain so will catch up later. Take care.

You realize if this doesn't pass, "The Terminator" Gov. Schwarzenegger, will make the six days from pound to slaughter to THREE DAYS-which means every pound pet will be 100% killed, often with GAS (they choke to death and drown in their own vomit). IF THIS BILL DOES NOT BECOME LAW-the pet slaughter will be most serious and grave-the dump yards will be piled higher and higher literally TONS of dead dogs, cats, puppies and kittens-perfectly adoptable pets will be slaughtered all because there are not enough homes for them. THIS SB 250 IS THE ONLY HOPE THEY HAVE
Call the Assembly members EVERY DAY, including all day Tuesday when this is voted on. The opposition (breeders, puppy mills) is calling every day several times a day. Phone calls are worth 1,000 e-mails! If this passes in California, other states will follow!!! CALL CALL CALL!!! Leave a message at night when you get free calling on your cell phone. Then, call during the day and speak to an aide. This is it!!! Let's stop the killing!!!
For 30 years, Jan Haagensen has been harassed and her farm in PA invaded with impunity by hunters, and her NO HUNTING signs and fences repeatedly torn down. 10 years ago, she had had enough, and approached the trespassing hunters to ask them to leave, and asked a hunter engaged in illegal hunting to cease and desist. When a hunter threatened to shoot her and her mother, she called police, which sided chummily with the hunters, and later charged her with 5 counts of "hunter harassment". The "kangaroo court" convicted her on all 5 counts. Being an attorney, she appealed to the appellate court and won, and is now challenging the PA Hunter Harassment Statute in federal court as being unconstitutional for inhibiting free speech and violating property rights. If she wins, doors will be open for challenging the equally unconstitutional Hunter Harassment laws of other states.

SB250 - The Pet Responsibility Act - PASSED ASSEMBLY! --ONE STEP CLOSER
TO BECOMING LAW!
THANK YOU FOR YOUR CALLS & EMAILS TO SAVE POUND PETS FROM
SLAUGHTER-IF THIS BILL DOES NOT PASS, GOV ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER, THE
"TERMINATOR" WILL LIVE UP TO HIS NAME AND HAVE POUND PETS DESTROYED IN
THREE DAYS INSTEAD OF THE SIX - THIS IS FACT!! PLEASE PROMOTE
CALIFORNIA'S SB 250-PET RESPONSIBILITY ACT. IN CALIFORNIA ALONE-A
quarter of a BILLION dollars spent YEARLY to kill perfectly adoptable
dogs, cats, puppies, and kitten. 500,000 dogs, cats, puppies, and
kittens gets slaughtered in pounds in California-every year. Please
help.
Nationwide-it costs American tax payers $2.5 BILLION DOLLARS a YEAR to
kill perfectly adoptable dogs, cats, puppies and kittens-that is about
10 to 15 million die every year. YOUR TAX PAYERS' MONEY HARD AT
WORK-SLAUGHTERED CATS, DOGS, PUPPIES AND KITTENS!!
http://www.yesonsb250.com/sb250-send-a-letter.php
No matter what State you live in-you can help. PLEASE help pass SB250.
California spends a quarter of a BILLION dollars A YEAR to kill
perfectly adoptable dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens-they die because
there are not enough homes for them due to people irresponsibly letting
them breed. Nationwide it costs America $2.5 BILLION dollars a year to
KILL perfectly adoptable dogs, cats, puppies and kittens. Please end
this vicious and cruel holocaust. SB250 IS the solution-other measures
were tried and they failed. The pet overpopulation problem continues to
escalate more and more, costing tax payers enormously.
Now Governor Schwarzenegger wants dog pound kills shortened from a six
day stay (then slaughter) to THREE DAYS-so each dog pound will be 100%
kill. Please pray SB250 passes-Please be compassionate and help these
helpless creatures.

That's some geese who were about to get gassed.
That's some geese who were about to get
gassed.
A flock of animal-rights
activists organized outside Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s Upper East Side
townhouse yesterday, outraged as geese were rounded up to be
gased.
“Hey Bloomberg what do you say? How many
geese did you gas today?,” shouted protesters.
For the next six weeks the city and the Port Authority are paying
federal wildlife officials to trap and gas two thousand Canada geese.
Yesterday the city rounded up at least 40 of them.
“The Mayor says he wishes them sweet dreams, one of the
most obscene statements a public official has ever made," said Wayne
Johnson from the Coalition to Stop the Canada Goose Kill. "Does he
really think going into a gas chamber means sweet dreams.”
MAYOR BLOOMBERG JOKES AS HE GASSES GEESE TO DEATH-HE DOESN'T LIKE THEM.
THESE GEESE WILL CHOKE AND DROWN IN THEIR OWN VOMIT AND DIE PAINFULLY
I have written to every single Senator across America why I do NOT
believe a single payer system would work-far too many Americans abuse
their bodies. Not restricted to this restaurant but McDonalds with Big
Macs and fries, and KFC with their bucket of grease. One out of 8
Americans have diabetes, over 98% of it has to do with LIFESTYLE
choices. One single open heart surgery costs about a million dollars.
There is no way we can afford it. So joke all you want-you get NO
universal health care.
MOST people in America has high cholesterol and this is absolutely
linked to diet and lifestyle (less than 10% has to do with true
genetics); one month supply of cholesterol lowering medication is quite
costly for each person
UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE?? NO WAY! NO HOW!!
WHY SHOULD WE HAVE TO PAY FOR PEOPLE WHO DELIBERATELY ABUSE THEIR BODIES LIKE THIS??? AND THIS GOES ON EVERYWHERE!!

Anthony's guest on June 19 will be Angi Metler, head of the New Jersey Animal Rights Alliance (NJARA). Angi, who has been arrested (30X), charged, tried and jailed, is considered an "ecoterrorist" by both hunters and Homeland Security, and NJARA is considered a quai-terrorist organization. Hear Angi and judge for yourself. Angi in green. Hunter's "enhanced" version: Anthony's June 26 guest will be Tim Gorski. Tim is an incredible activist and film producer specializing in undercover operations on the wildlife trade in S.E. Asia. He was there in the disaster zone when the tsunami hit. Last week state Rep. Wayne
Christian pulled a sly move in the legislature and created an exception
to the Texas Open Beaches Act that allows him and his neighbors on
Bolivar Peninsula to build houses on the PUBLIC BEACH.
This is bad news.
We have a campaign to convince Texas Governor Rick Perry to veto this bad bill.
This is very simple and your email could make the difference.
All you have to do is send an email---
to: greg.davidson@governor.state.tx.us
subject: Veto HB770
text: "Governor Perry, please veto HB770"
Please do it now. Your email is the one that will make the difference.
Dr. Peter Carter will be Anthony Marr's guest on Animal Voices June 12 Friday 3-4pm EST/noon-1pm PST - online-live www.coopradio.org; hot-line 604-684-7561. Peter is Anthony's co-author:
Angi Metler, president of the New Jersey Animal Rights Alliance (NJARA), leading anti-huntress whom hunters refer to as a "domestic terrorist", will be Anthony's guest June 19 Friday same time. Angi is in green: The hunters' version:
China has ordered ALL dogs to be clubbed and culled in
China, which means tens of thousands of dogs-EVEN IF VACCINATED AGAINST
RABIES-will be killed: Clubbed, buried alive, ETC. I am begging you to
sign a petition (only takes a few seconds of your time) which will be
sent to the Chinese authorities to STOP THIS DOG
CULL-it makes their government look very bad, and it is traumatic to
countless Chinese who love dogs-including seeing eye dogs. It is
inhumane, cruel, senseless. Can you imagine
how bad it would be if someone from the government forced their way in
your home and STOLE your dog and clubbed it to death in front of you?
That's what the Chinese are facing right now
Please sign
our petition addressed to Chinese president Hu Jintao calling for an
end to this senseless massacre and assurance that such cruelty will
never be allowed to happen again. Urge him to work with local and
international animal protection groups to create programs and laws to
promote better protection of animals of all kinds in China.
