.. ..Long Time Ago............Add to My Profile.. | .. More Videos.. ..The History and Mystery that is Druidspear.. ....It's summer 1993........ James Binning and Ian-Paul Rushbury, after spending a year in an experimental music co-operative called 'The Glove Puppet Orchestra,' decide it's time to go back to their roots and try their hands in the Folk Clubs of the West Midlands... ..After a few months of regular gigging and writing they asked Professor Firestick (then just plain ol' Paul Miller!) to accompany them at a local gig....he never left... ..Mark(E) Williams, veteran drummer of many top Birmingham bands ('Jacobites, Suicide Blonde') then joined the throng and after an all out 'electric' period it was time to revert back to the acoustic side of music... ..Augmented by Glenn Tranter, Peter Holder and Go Birch, they recorded the acoustic based.. ' The Legend of Math Meadow ' EP... ....Time Passes........ Drums fall out of favour and multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Jayne Powell is persuaded to join the band, closely followed by long-time Binning cohort Andrew Done on electric guitar. Michael Richards also takes over the drumming duties.....things get noisy again!.. ..Go Birch secures a radio session. The band troop into the BBC's Pebble Mill Studio in early January 1995. Six tracks were recorded in one day, in the studio next door to the 'Archers!'.. ..Four of these songs were released as ' The Miller's Tale' Cassette... ....Things Change........ Lead guitarists burn, shine and fade as lead guitarists are prone to do, and thus, Andrew Done bowed out... ..Occasionally, brief aquaintances found themselves on stage next to old friends, and the band played on...... ..And onto the time of '....Slow.' Andrew Done stuck around for most of the recording of Druidspear's debut CD. It was recorded for the most part in a secret location in Birmingham, over a period of about 2 months drafting in people when they were needed. Honourable mentions must go to all our guest musicians, including the afore mentioned Marky, Glenn and also Daveid Stinson and Mark Whitehouse... ..After much discussion and soul searching, the band decided to include some prieviously released material on this album. 'Homeland' and 'This Fog' are from 'The Miller's Tale' and 'A Maidens Shame' and 'Owl' are from 'The Legend of Math Meadow.' The last two tracks were given a sparkly new '96 remix!.. ....Since '...Slow'.... ...was released something wonderful has happened! By word of mouth alone, the CD began to sell, not only locally, or in the UK, but in continental Europe, Australia and the United States. The band now have nationwide distribution in the UK and USA... ....Anew Music......... '...Slow' was released on Druidspear's own label 'Anew Music.' This label is also responsible for the release of the debut recording by 'Nemed,' (featuring James Binning and Sue and Simon Lilly). This recording is entitled 'Four Trees, Four Spirits.' The album itself is designed primarily for use as an aid for meditation and healing..... ....Since 1997........ ...saw the arrival of our new, first choice drummer, Craig Shipley and also percussionist extraordinaire John Curle..... .....who was found in the back of the band bus, and refused to leave! Not only does John provide us with his superb percussioning skills, he also helps to design a lot of the imagery that goes with Druidspear... ..With a growing following awaiting the release of the second studio album, to bridge that gap Druidspear have released a limited edition live album, entitled,.. 'All your little Beasties'.. ....1999....... Saw a shake up to the band. New people, including Tenzin Wah and Lord Zakala pulled up chairs as old members moved on to new pastures. Recording continued on "the new album" in fits and starts, generally not helped by the chaos that was everyday life... ..Gigs were played, including the national Pagan Federation conference and a two man tour of Oz, but by 2003 the recording was finished and, along with the AnewMusic shop, the gigging band disbanded and Druidspear was put on a backburner until the album could be mixed and mastered... ..Now, finally nearing completion, the album may yet see the light of day... .. ..In the immortal words of the late, great Jerry Garcia, "What a long, strange trip it's been!!".. ..
