I'm a bit of a musical schizophrenic, always dabbling with different musical styles and instruments. I play acoustic and electric guitar, lap-steel, pedal-steel, dobro, and mandolin. In addition to working as a sideman with various bands, I write and perform solo instrumental guitar music, which you can hear on this page.
I worked for several years as the music editor for Acoustic Guitar magazine, and currently work as a music transcriber and web developer. I was a previous winner of the fingerstyle guitar competion at the Telluride Music Fesitival. I've written several guitar method books and have contributed articles and transcriptions to all the major guitar magazines and publishers. Check out some of my instructional guitar books here.
I currently play with the Atherton. Our new CD, Skyline Motel, is out now. Check it out and let me know what you think.
My solo guitar CD has been "in progress" for an embarrassing amount of time. Until that's done, you can hear my solo guitar music on this page, and on the new Woodsong-Acoustic Guitar Collection, along with some amazing guitar pieces by Alex De Grassi, Will Ackerman, and others.
Dylan, Been so long. Thanks for accepting my invite. The music sounds great! you still know how to shred the metal? just wondering. You playing anywhere close? I would love to come see ya. Take care of youself.
Aloha Dylan! I really enjoyed playing music with you in Hawaii. Just being around you made me a better musician -- I think! :P You're a phenomenal string player, thanks so much for sharing your talent with me, I feel very fortunate :D A hui ho! Till we meet again, and I hope your daughters liked the dolphin ukuleles. hehe.
dylan, hey dude...hope you are well. james has been hit by electric guitar fever...he might want to talk "gear" the next time we see you :) can't wait for this summer... you sound great as always. -sarah
You are one in a million. When I first saw you play at Suede (Atherton/Jerrytown bill a few years ago) I was starstruck! I'm very happy to have played with you in more than one setting. We will reunite for our fuzzbass/pedal steel only record!
I'm glad we finally played a show together. I'm looking forward to next week when I can get more up front and listen to you easier. Let's jam sometime for sure! Talk to you soon..
p.s. I just recently discover Lucinda Williams and she blows me away! I met Kenny Vaughn a couple time in Nashville. Cool dude.
Hey thanks for adding me. You have quite the resume, I'm impressed. I like your work with Atherton, but I'm really liking your solo music as well. I need to practice more.
We ought to get together soon & put some truth to artists you've recorded/performed with "recently" as far as my name is concerned. Lemme know if ya have some time & interest.
Dylan! Sorry I've been so out of touch...I've just been busy listening to the new album, which is AMAZING! I'm so proud of you guys! We'll have to get a beer and catch up sometime soon. Gonna try to make it to one of your next shows. Can't wait to hear Skyline Motel live. Hope you're doing great!
1. Facial Hair: Once it begins to gray A LOT (like mine), just keep it bushy on the bottom and short on the top. It's kind of the goatee equivalent to that terrible Mormon Utah Girl hairdo :)
2. Existential enlightenment: Learn how to make homemade pasta and paella at home - it won't help out our chunky problem, but it's great for the soul :)
3. Shredding: For me, getting back up to speed after not playing for years, it's been a metronome, a Suhr Classic, a Guytron head, and a bunch of pedals that make funny farting noises. It seems to be working! :) :)
Hello Dylan, Thanks very much for the friends request. Nice to hear from you. I enjoyed catching up on what you've been doing. Good luck with the band and the recording projects. Hope to see you in Utah sometime. All the best. www.prestonreed.com
Dylan.. Been way too long. How's gigs? Been busy? Congrats on new Atherton record. I'm playing right before Medeski, Scofield, Martin, & Wood on Sunday for the Jazz fest. Would love to play anytime. Let me know. randy
the sad truth is: i'm gonna have to miss the cd release show on the 13th. ugh. we're gonna need your pedal steel in the studio later this summer, i think. please? -paul
Hey I listened to the band...They sound great..I like the kinda dark soulful feel it gave me..not sad just soulful...I don't know...music is different for everyone...Good job...
Dylan,
What can I say.I have always thought you were a fantastic guitar player..Also I have known you longer than anyone else, so I am the expert... I knew you when you played an electric guitar. Thank you for the add and come over and listen and look at the funny old man on his Myspace..Good luck in all you do...
