dyko is the australian artist john barrie dyke. he grew up in melbourne and has been living in frankfurt for several years. dyko was formed in 2003 in frankfurt am main, in the beginning dyko was supported by michael wolff, producer of german icon/singer nina hagen. the music and visuals are created in close collaboration with german born christofer jost.
after over 100 concerts in 24 countries to audiences reaching from alaska to australia and from south africa to finland, dyko is pleased to announce its first independent international single release on ordnungsamt records! “in ordnung” and dyko’s version of the kraftwerk classic “autobahn” (feat. wolfgang flür ex-kraftwerk) is out now as single worldwide on ordnungsamt records. the official worldwide single release party will took place on august 28th in new york at the new goethe-institut wyoming building event space located in the thriving bowery arts district.
dyko's travels have taken them to the b2 club in moscow, club 103 + maria in berlin, the rote fabrik zurich, the exit festival in serbia (largest festival in eastern europe) and the nanjing pop festival in china for “deutschland land der ideen” alongside top german bands juli, mia, tele and 2raumwohnung. further more dyko has done several extensive concert tours, cultural discussions and workshops for the goethe-institut in australia, china, belarus, north america, north western europe and turkey. dyko’s music reflects john barrie dyke’s special fascination, passion and love for german culture and language and sees itself as an electronic cultural ambassador. despite this enthusiasm dyko questions neo-liberalism and the “wohlstandsgesellschaft“ in songs such as „in ordnung“ (in order) and „vorort“ (suburb). the concerts are in part like a german language course because some of the visuals that appear in the background originate from the „kontakte“ german language videos from the 70’s. amongst other things dyko combines language and video sequences from „kontakte“ and creates elementary repetitive text structures. the music is further enhanced live by the use of a screen showing abstract graphics and hyper-realistic visuals. the music of dyko has inspired wolfgang flür (ex-kraftwerk) to play e-drums again.
dyko’s method of creation is modelled on the bauhaus concept of the "artist as a technician", is devoted to electro-pop and new wave and is profoundly and lastingly inspired by bands/artists such as kraftwerk, the human league, david bowie, nina hagen, depeche mode and iggy pop. the focus of dyko’s work is the further development of this epoch.

ihre engagements führten sie u.a. in den club b2 in moskau, den club 103 und den club maria in berlin, die rote fabrik in zürich und auf das exit-festival in serbien, sowie im rahmen der initiative ‚deutschland – land der ideen‘ auf das deutsch-chinesischen pop-festival in nanjing, auf dem sie zusammen mit namhaften deutschen bands wie 'juli', '2raumwohnung', 'tele' und 'mia' auf der bühne standen. darüber hinaus hat dyko einige umfangreiche tourneen, kulturelle gespräche und workshops zusammen mit goethe-instituten in australien, china, nordamerika, nordwesteuropa, türkei und weißrussland durchgeführt. die musik von dyko reflektiert john barrie dykes besondere leidenschaft, faszination und liebe für die deutsche alltagskultur und sprache, der sich dyko als elektronischer kulturbotschafter verschrieben hat. trotz dieser begeisterung stellt dyko die wohlstandsgesellschaft und den neo-liberalismus in frage und bringt mit titeln wie „in ordnung“ und „vorort“ seine bedenken zum ausdruck. auf der bühne kombiniert dyko seine lyrics mit graphisch-abstrakten und hyper-realistischen projektionen. einige im hintergrund laufende visuals entstammen den sprachkursvideos „kontakte“ aus den 70er jahren, wodurch die konzerte teilweise wie eine art musikalischer deutschsprachkurs wirken. durch verbindung von sprache und videosequenzen aus „kontakte“ entstehen elementare, repetitive textstrukturen. durch dykos musik inspiriert packte wolfgang seine drum-sticks wieder aus und begleitete dyko auf ausgewählten konzerten.
fester bestandteil der auftritte sind die roten monteurähnlichen anzüge, denn dykos kreative arbeitsweise basiert auf dem bauhaus-konzept des "gestalters als techniker" und ist dem elektro-pop und new wave der 70er und 80er jahre verschrieben. inspiriert wird dyko von bands wie kraftwerk, nina hagen, ideal, trio und david bowie. im fokus dykos schaffens liegt die weiterentwicklung des sounds dieser epoche.
