A product of the “boogie-down –Bronx” Easy AD was born in Fordham Hospital. He attended South Bronx Public School 50. He had a dream of attending DeWitt Clinton High School because of its rich basketball history. However, he chose South Bronx High School instead for its small class size and diverse curriculum. AD did a 1 years stint at Lehman College majoring in Business Administration.
.
At the South Bronx High, he held the position of point guard on the varsity basketball team. The South Bronx team was the first to make it of the PSAL playoffs during its first year in the league. AD was also the Captain and the leader of the basketball team.
The Boys Club helped AD develop a keen sense of competitiveness, formidable leadership skills, and a strong work ethic. AD engaged in diverse activities including basketball, swimming, bumper pool, ping-pong, checkers, and chess. Soon, he began writing rhymes. One of the staff, AD and a friend, Donald, decided to form a group called the As Salaam Brothers. The group was comprised of 2 DJs, and 2 MCs (1 male, 1 female DJ and 2 male MCs). The group began playing local block parties in the Lambert Houses, the Dixie Club, the Boys and Girls Club, and local house parties.
The group disbanded in the summer of 1978. Soon thereafter, AD tried out for another group along with Donald D, his MC partner. At the tryout, Donald D made the cut; AD didn’t. During the next few months, AD wrote rhymes and attended shows to watch others perform. Then, he met DJ Tony Tone, who was putting together a group called the “Cold Crush Brothers.” AD told Tony Tone that he was an “MC.” Without question, Tony responded, “you’re down.” And from that point on, they were down together. The inception of the ColdCrush Brothers began with force – the group began making history. The original line-up of the CCB was, DJ Tony Tone, MC Easy AD, MC Whipper Whip, DJ Charlie Chase, MC Dotarock, and MC Mr. T-Bone. The group remained together for about 6 months.
Soon thereafter, Whipper Whip and Dotarock chose to move on to a more established group: Grand Wizard Theodore, and the Fantastic Five MCs. The new CCB included MC Easy AD, DJ Tony Tone, DJ Charlie Chase, JDL, Caz, and Kay-Gee. This is the group configuration that became the “history makers” – the “ground breakers.” The Legendary Cold Crush Brothers!
The ColdCrush Brothers are one of the most influencial groups of all times. CCB members are known for their stage stomping performances and funky melodies. The group has set the standards for all Hip Hop to come. The ColdCrush Brothers appeared in the first Hip Hop movie, Wild Style.
Wild Style, which was released in the early 80s, featured grafitti, breakdancing and the art of MC’ing and DJ’ing on film.
The ColdCrush Brothers appeared on singles with Blastmaster KRS-One, Chuck D of the world acclaimed Public Enemy, and Doug E Fresh, “The World’s Greatest Entertainer.” The ColdCrush Brothers are known for their epic battles with Fantastic Five Mcees in the world famous Harlem World Entertainment Complex in the 80s. The ColdCrush Brothers was the first Hip Hop group to rock stages abroad, taking its high-energy stage show to Japan in the middle 80s. AD also toured with Africa Bambata, and the Soulsonic Force during 1987 and 1988. The ColdCrush Brothers’ strong rhymes and melodies, along with the influence the group has had on Hip-Hop culture, is sufficient reason for it to be deemed the “Rolling Stones” of Hip-Hop culture.
The Cold Crush Brothers has performed at diverse venues including Madison Square Garden, Roseland, Harlem World Entertainment Complex, the Savoy Manor and the Brooklyn Museum. The group has had co-performances with such notables as Doug E Fresh, Chuck D (Public Enemy), LL Cool J, Run DMC, KRS-One, Luke, DJ Kid Capri, DJ Red Alert, Grand Master Flash & The Furious Five, The Sugar Hill Gang, Big Daddy Kane, Jay-Z, The Roots, Fat Joe, and O.D.B. – Wu Tang Clan. CCB’s movie and television appearances include Wild Style – the first Hip-Hop movie, Live @ Five, MTV, Metro Live and Russell Simmons’ One World Music Beat. The group has also been covered in numerous magazines including Source and Vibe.
In 1999, AD partnered with KRS-One, a one of his close friend, on a hot, new initiative called “The Temple of Hip Hop.” KRS-One’s special project consisted of a college lecture tour designed to stimulate discourse on the history of Hip Hop culture.
For the past 14 years, Easy AD has worked a Non Profit Organzation running programs for teens. For AD, the work is not about the money – it’s about giving back to the community. AD’s programs offer local youth activities in sports and recreation, leadership development and academic enhancement. It’s impossible for AD to walk down a stretch of Harlem without receiving a “shoutout” from one of his students. In the world of local youth programs, he’s the “guru” of young people. Easy AD keeps it real simple – it’s all about mutual respect. He connects with kids on their level – through their music and culture.
