Some bands seem determined to show everyone just how deep and magisterial they can make their music—thankfully, Echo Kings aren't like that. This record consists of old-school pop—light, fresh tunes that manage to be easy to listen to without seeming vapid.
Opener "Can't Take No" bops with late-'90s-style fun. The album settles into itself nicely, with tracks like "Is it Crazy," which sounds like a tune The Killers would write if they weren't so damn pompous.
Unfortunately, it ends with the overwrought "Don't Give Up"—a drastic shift in mood and an unnecessarily weighty postscript. But that doesn't bring the album down too much. It's still
god i like you guys more every time i listen to you. what an interesting sound. kind of like an evolved talking heads with more dance appeal. great packaging too.
