Econoline
This Band Isn't Funny Anymore
"...the songs' charms worm their way into the deepest recesses of your
listening gear - initial so-what thoughts are replaced by an incessant
nodding of the head and tapping of the toes, by an optimism that lasts
right through until the closing 'Go Team!'. There are many bands, most
of them American, that ply a finer line in this sort of college rock,
but Econoline's experience offers them a distinct advantage over their
domestic peers; thus, these songs resonate with a greater emotional
force than many a similar release..
.. The Pavement and Seafood-fancying previously uninitiated will find much to
cherish here.

from oxford bands live review of a two piece set from february '06
"..Econoline have recorded as a full band in the past, but tonight they perform as a two-piece; acoustic guitars, keyboards, backing tracks and at times, a banjo holding together sparse versions of rich tunes. This is a band with a great knowledge of music through their set I hear touches of post-rock key shifts and time changes, new-folk fingerpicking and traditional indie-pop but with Scanlons distinctive voice and the sheer charm of it all, Econoline equal more than a collection of influences. They effortlessly outshine many more serious singer-songwriter acts and melodic indie bands. "

from opposition T about "this band isn't funny anymore"
"Evidently, the band was very good fun when most of these songs were recorded. And they are songs, lovely little 2 or 3 minute melodies, with quirky titles: "Chicks Dig Scars" - do they now? Yet near the end of their life as a 4-piece, OppositionT reviewed this band as an emo outfit - so Something HEAVY Happened.
There are some Heavy moments on the CD, the feisty screams of "Sex Tips for Losers", the petulant stomp of "No", and the melancholy anthem called "Slate Wiped Clean". But most of this LP is bright and Summery as the Boo Radleys or Ricky Spontane. The Hackett guitar of "Sorbet" just fizzes, yes it does.
Even when Econoline are angry, every song is full of beautifully intricate guitar jangling. Even when they're wistful, there's nothing very much more downbeat than on a Belle and Sebastian record. I just can't stop listening to their indie pop nugget "A Charm Offensive", with its Cocteau Twins strings, its pleading line "And I'm trying to do my best", and its abrupt ending.
I genuinely STILL can't get over how much Ian Scanlon's voice is like Robert Smith's, and a lot of this album would stand up against the Cure's most upbeat efforts on Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me.
Econoline have a launch show as a 4-piece, and then they're back to live shows as a two-piece. With the strength of the tunes, the stripped-down version should be a winner. Meantime, bag yourself one of these beauties, the Econoline album is (couldn't resist it) a bargain.

"Here's a new single by Econoline . It starts off tuneful and goes noisy later. Actually it doesn't stop being tuneful it just gets noisier as it goes along. The sound of Busted if they discovered accordians and tunes and were into The Notwist and weren't public schoolboy dicks. Actually scrub the Busted and insert emo band of your choice...lets say...The Promise Ring. Shit, the B sides gone into a dub explosion ting. Very good."
"
So when Econolines Ian Scanlon laments over acoustic guitars, accordion and swathes of fuzzy guitar about conformity (adding a little sardonic bite by singing from the viewpoint of the institution/social pressure) that he evokes memories of Robert Smith adds a homey feeling, instead of provoking cries of mimicry

most recently Rob Da Bank has been playing one of our electronic tracks "viborg" on his Blue Room and onemusic shows on Radio one, and we've been gigging this year with all sorts of bands all over the UK, rainer maria, mates of state, blood red shoes, former bullies, Jeffrey Lewis, David Thomas broughton, get cape wear cape fly, bikini atoll and the singing adams to name a few.
Currently the members of econoline are having a little rest from the indie rock and doing some other things, you will hear about this forthwith, at lenght, and in depth.
What is a band? A band is a vehicle that is commonly and mostly used to transport songs, ideas, and people of course. Oftentimes, it is like a container truck, hard to maneouver, thirsty for fuel, ploughing down those who get in the way! However a band’s size can be much smaller, but still serve the same function as the usual bands.
One of the groups that fall into this category is econoline. This small but sturdy band has been built to haul and tow just about everything and anything, it’s seated four, five, two, one and now three people. Econoline has certainly earned a good reputation as a band, since the year 2000, and is still counting, it’s been drawing comparisons with sebadoh, the cure, dinosaur jr, Seam, and the wedding present, The entire line up is composed of Ian Scanlon, Piers Chandler and Steve Ansell (also of blood red shoes/ projections). Upon its first public appearance, it was introduced with different versions which included the cargo version, the passenger version, and the pickup truck version. We’ll let you decide which of these was which, all versions have recorded and released material one way or another, and toured the UK and bits of Europe in a good show of roadworthiness.
Econoline has been a favorite for many people who choose bands which could transport and carry groups of people to the place where indie rock lives, with live shows that mean something to people, as well as holding the capacity for towing and hauling the tunes and melodies that those people need. Through the years, this band has undergone various changes and redesigns to give it a more sophisticated and comfortable appeal inside and out. Aside from that, econoline also received commendations and awards like a 2002 session from John Peel, and sharing bills with all manner of other truckers on music’s wide roads; Max Tundra, Pram, Wolf colonel, OUTHUD, cat on form, the Oedipus, hirameka hi fi, themselves, les savy fav, karate, mates of state, Jeffrey and Jack Lewis, the lapse, wolves! Of Greece, tristeza, Kaito, Hush the Many, former bullies and innumerable others. Our new album "this band isn't funny anymore" is available for mail order
