From making front page newspaper headlines, to battling US rappers on their home turf, to guest-starring on one of the most popular commercial radio hits of summer ’08, you could never accuse Melbourne hip-hop artist 360 of being underexposed.
The 22-year-old emcee, a veteran of the local hip-hop scene despite his relative youth, has notoriety in spades. However, it’s his music – culminating in his acclaimed 2008 debut album What You See Is What You Get – that has kept him at the forefront of listeners’ minds from Brooklyn to Brisbane.
After years of making waves via DJ mixtapes and underground club nights, 360’s star really began to ascend in late 2007, when he was chosen as one of only two Aussie emcees to represent his country at the World Rap Championships in New York City. Despite not winning the battle, Sixty cemented himself as an “artist to watch” among discerning hip-hop listeners everywhere.
Not one to rest on his laurels, 360’s next power move was the release of his first single/video, the hilarious Bec Hewitt dedication ‘Mamma Mia’. The clip – featuring Sixty stalking and cavorting with a Bec lookalike, and leaked to the internet on the first day of the Australian Open tennis tournament – sparked a media frenzy, generating a front page story in Melbourne’s mX daily newspaper and even attracting comment from Lleyton Hewitt’s manager. About 30,000 online views later, the clip has gone down as one of the most notorious moments in local hip-hop history.
With momentum continuing to build, Sixty dropped his debut album What You See Is What You Get in March 2008 through rising independent powerhouse Soulmate Records. The album, described as “a slick and serious musical attempt” by The Sydney Morning Herald, is notable for the controversial banger ‘So Fake’ and for introducing the wider world to the unparalleled musical chemistry between 360 and his now-infamous partner-in-rhyme Pez.
This chemistry was to rear its head in the most breathtaking of ways with ‘The Festival Song’, the official first single from Pez’s debut album A Mind Of My Own. The track, released in September 2008 and featuring scene-stealing raps from 360, built up steam on national youth broadcaster Triple J and MySpace before being added to the national Nova radio network and eventually receiving airplay via media juggernaut Austereo.
The national exposure of ‘The Festival Song’ has set the stage for 360’s forthcoming sophomore album, due out in 2009. The album promises to draw on influences as diverse as MGMT, The Presets, Justice and Bloc Party, while featuring Sixty’s ever-strengthening verbal talents and melodic nous.
360 – What You See Is What You Get – out now on Soulmate Records.
