Sounds Like
the sound of scratching nails trying to open a hole and come out in the light
Evripidis and his Tragedies began as a personal musical project of Evripidis playing his piano and singing back in Athens. He did some very rough recordings at the asthmatic hammond of Toynbee Hall in London and at friends..houses in his hometown, a long time ago.
When he moved to Barcelona he started doing concerts alone, mostly in seedy bars but soon he discovered that his girlfriends Marisol ( from the groups Eleva, Elevator), Odil and Annie (from the group How dare U!) and Nora had all fantastic voices and a lot of talent. During the same time Cristina joined on violin, providing her dark wave-meets-baroque touch. Later there was Iker (from the groups Mus, Las Esferas Invisibles) on bass and occasional guitar and Jaume on drums ( although he was not a drummer, but that was the brilliant thing...he used to play keyboards with the Epic Kind). So, depending on the venue, the circumstances and the way the stars would align or the wind would blow, Evripidis and his Tragedies were (and still are) a one-man show or a crowded scene.
After recording a 7-inch single in collaboration with Spanish artists Jeleton for their project “Las Lilas de Jeleton”, Evripidis and is Tragedies recorded his debut on Barcelona.. s Touchme records produced by long time collaborator Manel Ibañez
(from the groups Bubbles, Les tres bien enseble, Megaafonia) and Gerard Civat. After some time some key changes took place. Since Iker lived in another city, a new bass player was added, Aleix (a very prolific kid and also a member of Alba y Aleix and Extraperlo and played in a zillion other bands from time to time...) and a saxophone player Abel ( from Le Pianc) who added a groovy touch to whichever song he should set his hands upon...he also became something like an “official cheerleader and dancer” of the group (What do you mean is he a good dancer? well how does he dance? close, very very close...)! So they went on , working on new songs and giving concerts...once more, they could be 9 people on stage being noisy and loud or just Evripidis humming quietly...or maybe Evripidis just with Marisol...or Marisol and Annie...or Marisol and Anie and Abel...all the combinations were posible and still are.
Later in 2007, they recorded a version of the Magnetic Fields..song "Time enough for rocking when we are old" for a tribute cd . In addition, they also recorded 9 songs in collaboration with Catalan visual artist David Bestué for his short film “Historia de la Espuma”. For this project, as well as for the Magnetic Fields cover, producers were Manel Ibañez and Gerard Civat again.
In 2008 more changes took place. They recorded some live songs (including two versions of El Guincho) for a cd compilation of a series of concerts in La Pedrera and then Aleix concentrated on his other projects and Victor joined as the new bass player. Evripidis.. flatmate and multi-instrumenalist Marc (from the group Abrevadero) started collaborating regularly, recording and singing in concerts. Furthermore, Abel..s brother Sergi (from Le Pianc) started recording and playing with Evripidis and his Tragedies occasionally. Nora lives in another city and Odil is making her own music but still collaborates from time to time.
Evripidis and his Tragedies recently recorded the soundtrack for "Hombre Caminando", a short film by Jordi Cusso. The music was produced by Manel Ibañez and Gerard Civat at From the backyard studios. Later that year, Evripidis and his Tragedies recorded “All those summer parties” for the website of Barcelones Magazine. The song was produced by Juanjo Alba.
Evripidis and his Tragedies is currently preparing the new record with all those friends who played with him all these years and some new collaborators (Borja, Adrian, Xavi, Luis, Santi, Laura and the story goes on…) All together, they also occasionally prepare a series of concerts called “The Night of the Living Covers” where they “ressurect” some of their favourite songs, doing acustic versions of them.
Evripidis and his Tragedies love to play live, no matter where. Alone or with his band mates and friends , he has played from small bars to nightclubs, art galleries to boutiques, international festivals to abandoned flats, theatres to rooftops, record stores to fashion shows in Barcelona, Madrid, Athens, Paris, Berlin, London, New York and many other cities.
He also djs playing his favourite songs, from indie pop to northern soul, doo-wop to new wave, ye-ye to beat and much more at his Evripidis and his Tragedies Jukebox parties.
