The members of Exemption met when they were but children; lost and starving feral beasts left to die under the Kiwanis bridge in the vast Massapequan wilderness. Fate found Thomas Moran, Ray Marte, and Nick Lee shaking hands at the impressionable age of thirteen, forming a bond that has remained strong for eight years now. As an infant band they released many demos, and even in their first few years of awkward life began to attract fans of all ages and tastes with an eclectic mix of bottom-heavy riffs, intriguing musical design, and a reckless disregard for anything that resembled fodder for the sheep of Long Island (and elsewhere). During this time Exemption played every club, bar, house, basement, skate park, soccer field, park, church, and temple they could and formed a strong bond with the likes of Fastizio, Vision Through Sound, and the late Voice of Dissension. On April 20th, 2007 the band released their first full-length album "The Rabbit Hole." The album is an eleven track epic that nears the 80 minute mark; an impressive achievement for a band whose members were only sixteen and seventeen at the time of recording. The album is rooted in metal, with riffs that lash out at the listener with a Pantera-esque ferocity and grooves reminiscent of Sabbath, C.O.C., and Down but what has made the album so successful with all kinds of music lovers is its tendency to transcend genres from song to song and at times even riff to riff. The band dips its collective big toe into blues crooners, progressive space odysseys, thrash cyclones, swinging-dick good time rock jams, and at times even the crustiest of sludgy, vertigo-inducing guitar torture, all with precise execution and a purely punk rock energy . "The Rabbit Hole" led Exemption to become one of Ultimate-Guitar.com's February Best Unsigned Bands of the Month, and eventually one of their Best Unsigned Bands of the Year for 2008. Check out some reviews under the "Sounds Like' section on the left.
In promoting "The Rabbit Hole," Exemption has played hundreds of gigs, including some very memorable opening slots. The band was privileged enough to open for The Misfits(!), Byzantine, LA Guns, Slaughter, Rhino Bucket, and Dry Kill Logic. They are close to selling out of the album, originally ordering one-thousand copies and selling them all themselves at shows as well as on cdbaby and iTunes. The band also managed to attract the attention of Mr. Wolfman of Underground Downtown Productions and M.T. Head Records in Gainesville, Florida which led to their first east coast tour in January of 2008 and a second the following Summer. Because of these tours as well as some one-off out of state shows whenever they could Exemption now has friends all down the East Coast with concentrations in Florida thanks to Wolfman and Pennsylvania thanks to their friends in Solegion (as well as many others!).
M.T. Head Records is co-releasing the band's brand new "Harmony of the Spheres E.P." this August. The E.P. is a six song wrecking ball, with some of the heaviest and some of the most accessible material of the band's career thus far. New influence from bands like Mastodon, Queens of the Stone Age, Boris, The Bronx, as well as The Beatles, The Allman Brothers, and even Bob Dylan can be heard battling for preeminence on each track. The E.P. is both a definitive statement of a band starting to define its own sound as well as a bridge between a young band with reckless ideas and a mature band with a focused agenda to really put something new out there that will turn people on their heads and destroy preconceived notions of what can and cannot be done in a heavy band.
Exemption is here to stay and their next album will fuck your day up.
