I like all kinds of music, but the music that influences my life other than Jazz is; Hip-Hop, Reggae, Rare Groove, Dub, Garage, Drum & Bass, Soca, Afro and Broken beat and traditional African music. I love all the old Reggae singers like Debra Glasgow, I used to want to be one, until I found my love for Jazz music, so; I like to amalgamate my musical influences with my personal sound.
The vocalists I admire the most other than the ones I've named are: Luther Vandross, Maxwell, D'Angelo, Eska, Jill Scott, Julie Dexter and John Legend.
Sounds Like
Singers don't like to be compared to other singers!lol! I sound like Fae Simon, but I have been told I sound like Erykah Badu, but obviously I would disagree - you decide!;)
I have always wanted to sing and perform on stage. In my pursuit, I was initially operatically trained at the age of 14years. I then joined the Weekend Arts College in Hampstead, where I studied Jazz vocals, Jazz, Ballet, Tap and Contemporary dance.
At WAC all the students are encouraged to perform, so I got my first live performance experience there. I was also asked to assist teaching vocals and drama for the younger students. Since then I have continued to teach vocals privately.
Since finishing my degree in performing arts, my focus was on finding my own sound. I was at a loss until I heard artists like Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu, as my Jazz influences like: Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughn have such dated sounds. The former artists showed me how to contemporise Jazz music and gave me a pathway of sound to follow and personalise.
I am currently completing my debut album called: ‘Mellowdrama’ and have recently completed the e.p. As a young Jazz artist from Britain, I know it’s going to be hard to survive in this Pop world, but I am determined to be the best I can be and spread positive messages to all who want to listen.
