The Feminist Library's Interests
|
| General | Large archive collection of the Women's Liberation Movement, particularly second-wave materials from late 1960s to 1970s, by and about women. Our non-fiction collection consists of about 5,000 books dating from 1900 to the present day. The collection is very strong in the areas of the arts, politics and the Women's Liberation Movement, women's histroy, and mental and physical health. We also have about 2,500 works of fiction from all around the world, the majority of which are in English and some in various European and Latin American languages. Our poetry collection of some 500 publications represents a significant number of little-known and/or self-published woman poets, as well as poetry by more well-known and commercially published women. The general section is supported by a wide-ranging bibliography section and three donations: the Matriarchy Collection, the Marie Stopes/Birth Control Collection, and the recently acquired collection of the Women's Health Library. An estimated 1,500 periodicals titles are represented. They date from the late 1960's to the present day and they occupy about 85 metres of library shelving. Approximately 40% of titles come from the United Kingdom, 36% from Northern America, 12% from mainland Europe, 4% from the Pacific, and 2% from South America. In addition to English there are significant numbers of periodicals written in other languages. Sixteen linear metres of pamphlets, dating from the early 1970s to the present day, are ranged alphabetically in provenance to subject order. About 12.5% are of specific interest to Black women and women of colour, and other interests are strongly represented. There is a significant amount of material in non-European languages. Other materials include publications from organisations such as the Government, the Equal Opportunities Commission and the Internation Labour Organisation, and press cuttings. Academic publications include university occasional papers and approximately 1,200 individual seminar papers and reports. | | Books | Links and information for people who want to find out more about feminism or the Feminist Library.

Who I'd like to meet:
We are looking for volunteers, members, and people who would like to donate materials or organise a discussion group or event. Please get in touch via the contact details above if you have queries, suggestions or would like to help out in any way. There is a significant amount of material needing to be added to the collection from recent donations. The archives are not yet catalogued in the detail necessary to reveal their value. Organising the collection for ease of use is one of our current priorities. We are also looking at ways to expand the collection including filling gaps in existing collections and looking towards new media as alternative forms of mapping women's histories.
