FK BIO
Under cellist Margaret Ayre's orchestration, D.C./Philadelphia quartet Fern Knight transfigures her acoustic Medieval-tinged songs with contrasting layers of 60s improv, 70s prog rock and NWOBHM – retelling the band’s collective history.
Juxtapositions of the arcane and modern in her music and life drew Margaret to pen the band’s fourth album (vhf), Castings, a song cycle exploring how the ancient divinatory art of the Tarot and the well-worn archetypes contained therein continue to flow through present day society.
The core quartet is rounded out by harp/electric bass (Jesse Sparhawk), Flying V/drums (Jim Ayre) and violin (James Wolf). Guest drummers have included Brian Viglione of the Dresden Dolls.
Fern Knight has toured mainland EU extensively, recently performing in November 2008 at the renowned Tanned Tin Festival in Castellon, Spain. Besides regular east coast U.S. shows, Fern Knight also enjoyed a successful west coast tour in May 2008. Ayre also co-wrote with Greg Weeks and others a new soundtrack to Valerie and Her Week of Wonders in The Valerie Project (CD/2LP Drag City 2007) and has lent her playing/arranging skills to many recordings such as Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Damon and Naomi and Espers (s/t).

Recorded: live on March 16, 2003 at the Beta Lounge in San Francisco
In 1967, San Francisco’s Fifty Foot Hose were certainly one of the
innovators of a sound that took Psychedelia to new heights and was
captured on the band’s one record, Cauldron. They are a totally
unique hybrid—on one hand pulsating bay area acid rock, on the other,
fractured electronic freakery, becoming one whole cohesive being. The
sci-fi-ish video game-like artwork hinted at the sounds within, as did
the Limelight label’s pedigree for truly progressive sounds. Band
leader, Cork Marcheschi, used homemade electronic devices to create
crude and experimental soundscapes and instrumental compositions that
were sprinkled throughout the album.
Often starting shows with a swelling rumble that exploded into the
first song, they soon developed a rabid following on the SF scene,
though there was the occasional totally wrong gig, like when a
very-pregnant Nancy had to perform at a Catholic Girls’ school! Still,
the group wowed the crowds, performing with greats like Chuck Berry and
Fairport Convention.
