Fighting With Wire emerged from the ever creative Northern Ireland music scene in 2003, the brainchild of guitarist Cahir O’Doherty (Jetplane Landing / Clearshot) and drummer Craig McKean (Clearshot). An idealistic bunch, they’ve since done what rock bands are meant to do: they wrote a bunch of songs, and took to the road. The last three years has seen them play shows with the likes of Reuben, Biffy Clyro, Million Dead, Seafood, YCNI:M and Future Of The Left, racking up hundreds of miles and honing their live show into a ferocious explosion in the process. After putting out a number of limited edition DIY singles, they took a breather at the end of 2006 and finally started work on their longawaited debut album. Recorded in Northern Ireland and finally completed in mid-2007, Man Vs Monster is a dynamic beast of a record – raging out of your speakers one moment yet gentle and intricate the next, and all without losing focus of what’s important: the song.
2008 was a huge year as we saw the band record two Maida Vale sessions for BBC Radio 1, as well as the release of their first two singles from the Man Vs Monster album; 'Everyone Needs A Nemesis', which reached number 1 on the MTV Myspace chart, and 'All For Nothing'. The year also brought performances at a number of high-profile festivals, including Leeds and Reading, T in the Park, Oxygen, One Big Weekend and Truck. As 2008 drew to a close Fighting With Wire had completed over 100 shows, including four full UK tours, two as headliners, a headline European tour, and their debut performances in America.
Early 2009 saw the band notch up another UK tour which saw Fighting With Wire's first sell out London show. Shortly after, the band made a string of radio appearance, including several live sets to promote the third single 'Sugar' from their debut album Man Vs Monster. Fighting With Wire again achieved number one on the MTV Myspace Chart, occupying the top ten for several weeks. With the UK taken care of for a few months,
In March 2009 Fighting With Wire turned their attention to the U.S for the South By South West festival. The band announced themselves in style by racking up 11 shows in just over 3 days. These appearances signalled the end of the live shows for 2009 as their attention turned to the writing and recording of the second album. However, there was still time for a couple of shows in the band's native Northern Ireland to test out some of their new material, as well as an appearance at the Sonisphere Festival in August.
As 2009 draws towards its end, the band have just entered the recording stage of the follow up to their Man Vs Monster album at Dark Horse Recordings, with legendary producer Nick Raskulinecz.
What does 2010 hold for Fighting With Wire? A new album, lots more touring and world domination!
ROCKSOUND "Do what you believe in, believe in what you do and dont give a damn about anything or anybody else. That seems to be the philosophy of fighting with wire, both in terms of their songs and their live performances. Fronted by Jetplane landing guitarist Cahir O Doherty, these 3 guys make enough noise to drown out an armageddon-scale nuclear attack.Surprisingly for the barfly though the sound tonight is crisp and clear. O Dohertys guitar acts as a direct and constant electric current, causing him to jerk and lucrh around aggressively on-stage and forcing tortured yelps and screams out of his mouth. They are confrontational, agitated and bitter, their full-on, riff driven songs a (sucessful) self proclaimed attack against a seething mass of generic and unoriginal rock and indie bands"
KERRANG Derry's fightingwithwire are living proof that despite the gazillions already used you can still come up with a fucking great band name if you try. More importantly the music matches; vicious and stinging in parts but applied with dexterity and finesse. It would seem trite, lazy and geographically convenient to place them somewhere between Therapy? and Ash but add a raw garage-rock edge and you're sniffing around the same park.
hey guys - used to play at some of the same venues as you in Belfast. was with a South African band called Sunways at the time. now doing my own thing... think you guys are class!!! (: Sarah
Not really known about you guys for long. But I found you on last.fm as a recommendation recently as I'm quite a huge fan of Reuben. Just wanted to say you guys are awesome, and the next time I'm not in student poverty I'm going to actually BUY Man Vs Monster... an alien event these days.
Less of my pish, you guys rock, keep on keeping on.
Hope the new album is going well guys! Man vs Monster was mine and my best mate's album of the summer in 08 and i have great memories of drinking and playing Mario Kart 64 to that album. I have complete respect for a band that release an all out rock album that ticks all the boxes that rock music should. I'm a huge fan of Weezer and Foo Fighters and there old stuff was just real good distorted songs and i'd say your album was the same.
I can't wait to hear the new album, chuck up a teaser or two if you get the chance.
Hey Me and all my mates saw you at Sonisphere fest, and we pretty much all thought that you were one of the best bands at the whole fest. You were amazing Any plans on coming to northeast england anytime soon?
