My living room is cluttered with library books. If you manage to dig me out from under them, I'd love to have tea with you.

Clara Claiborne Park's "The Seige" is an amazing description of one family's journey, step by step, with their daughter who was diagnosed with autism at a time when there was very little understanding of the condition. Even more amazing is the fact that they had very little professional support to begin with, but they persevered.

The sequel to The Seige is entitled Exiting Nirvana, A Daughter's Life with Autism. Clara Park has managed to synthesize years of data collection into an amazingly readable and joyful book. Her daughter's paintings and sketches are a source of fascination to me, as well as her systems and associations, and the description of how her language developed. Clara wrote that she had, in her kitchen, a set of envelopes, separated into several categories, where the family recorded data on Jessy. The thing that struck me most was the amount of love poured into Jessy by the family, especially the mother, but also by all of the volunteers and "housemates" over the years. Without this "village", Jessy's life would have developed so richly and fully. (A side note: Jessy's paintings are factual and magical at the same time, they're quite beautiful.)

A Thorn in My Pocket, by Eustacia Cutler, is a must-read for those of us who have read Temple Grandin's and Donna Williams' books. Her elegantly understated eloquence speaks for all of us autie parents. If Temple's Thinking in Pictures was a re-baptism of my idea of what it is to be human, Eustacia's tale stimulates me to re-evaluate my thoughts about maternity. I admire her bravery in the face of the misunderstandings of what autism was at the time her daughter was young.

Excellent!  I was just going off what was on your profile, and I didn't see anything about you being a writer.  I'll take a look at some of your blogs/writings etc.  It should be interesting.  :)  And of course poetry is writing lol
  • Nov 10 2009 11:55 PM

I"m sorry, it appears that you're not a writer (most of the people I contact are writers).  But you love books -- that's why I added you.  Glad to have you around! :)

Hey thank you.  And thanks for the welcome.  I haven't been on MySpace very long at all -- it's all new to me -- but I'm excited:  it's an excellent way to connect with other writers.  That's great, because in Utah they're almost impossible to find. :)  Have a great day.  I look forward to getting to know your writings a little better.

    I don't want Sundaes, they're too Sweet,
And Cheetos are too hard to eat!
I've had my fill of Jello too.
But wait, I've tasted something new!
It's not too sweet upon my face
It's outdoors in my favorite place,
To try all kinds of dirtfilled treats,
Like soil, sand and bugs to eat.

    …Blurred a waist high river
    foam against the horse
    riding naked clothes and boots
    and pistol in the air

    Crossed a crooked river
    loving in my head
    ambled dry on stubble
    shot a crooked bird

    Held it in my fingers
the eyes were small and far
it yelled out like a trumpet
    destroyed it of its fear…

A child is a butterfly in the wind,
Some can fly higher than others,
But each one flys the best it can.
Why compare one against the other?
          Each one is different,
           Each one is special,
          Each one is beautiful.

Tomorrow is not promised to anyone young or old alike,
And today may be the last chance
you get to hold your loved one tight.
So if you're waiting for tomorrow,
    why not do it today?
    For if tomorrow never comes,
you' ll surely regret the day,
That you didn't take that extra time
for a smile, a hug, or a kiss
and you were too busy to grant someone,
what turned out to be their one last wish.
So hold your loved ones close today,
    and whisper in their ear,
Tell them how much you love them
and that you'll always hold them dear
Take time to say 'I'm sorry,'
'Please forgive me,' 'Thank you,' or 'It's okay.'
    And if tomorrow never comes,
you'll have no regrets about today.
