Pyrography is writing or drawing onto wood using an extremely hot instrument.
In Victorian times pyrography was known as ‘Poker Work’ as it was done with a red hot poker, but the word Pyrography derived from the Ancient Greeks. ‘Pyro’ which meant Fire and ‘Graphy’ which meant Writing. Hence,
Pyrography – Fire Writing.
Historic examples can be found all over the world, and are as old as man in his cave! Work can be linked to the most early cultures and civilisations.
Wood is the favourite material for pyrography but it is commonly used on other surfaces such as Velvet, cork, leather, plastic, nut, gourds, paper, egg shell, horn and even bone!
All pyrography is unique; it takes a great amount of time to produce a piece of work as it takes longer to ‘work the pen’.
There are many different pen points available:
Spoon points for shading and blending.
Blade points for feathering
Power point a heavy duty point
Fine point for fine detail
All of the above have many variations and create a variety of vastly different effects.
Which in turn create the most beautiful works of art that are ‘Pyrography’.
